Tracking the iPhone hype generator

Feb 18th 2009 6:13PM (TUAW.com)
Yeah, most ordinary people on the street don't use the word Android (yet). All adverts I've seen for the G1 don't have the word in there, just "With Google" so "google phone" would be more pervasive.

As for the iPhone, I'm going to agree with Hawkman that the Apple community, not to mention the gadget crowd in general, had of course been dreaming of a once mythical iPhone for a few years prior. Apple didn't need to introduce hype. We'd done it for them with constant rumours and speculation. We focused so much on it in the run up to announcement that the end result in that graph was inevitable.

I'd actually go as far as to say the "Cult of Mac" needs no orchestrated hype at all for any product. We come up with crazy rumours all the time. We build up anticipation around them, flip out if they true or fume that we got it wrong. It really doesn't need much input anymore.

Part of the reason I love this community. It's so passionate.

Microsoft on RROD: The worst is behind us

Feb 17th 2009 3:09PM (Joystiq)
Ah, I can see why my perhaps inarticulate nature may have made you dismiss me. On reflection the saying I was really going for was "Once bitten, twice shy" and my 360 dying was a bite of Jaws-like proportions. I thought I was in the clear and just when the warranty ends and my disposable money goes down, BOOM!

I didn't really imply a deliberate conspiracy on MS' part, just that I now no longer have faith in their ability to create a decent hardware product. I've been far too lenient on companies in the past (i.e. a certain former hardware maker and destroyer of hedgehogs) and have been burned before. I hold all companies to perhaps unreasonable standards nowadays.

I guess the moral of the story is. "Never buy a launch console" and I no longer intend to.

Microsoft on RROD: The worst is behind us

And you just replied snarkily to someone who hardly ever used his PS3 outside of exclusives and quite frankly wasn't convinced of the machine in the first place. I smell fanboy.

Quite frankly I'm a realist. The economy is hurting me right now. I can barely justify the new releases I want. Why should I spend the repair money when I can use it to buy those same games on a system I own that hasn't broken down.

You can continue to spend money to keep your favourite console running. I don't have the same insane attachments to my consoles as you do. I have alternatives.

If it were the PS3 in the same situation I'd swear Playstation out of my life just the same.

Microsoft on RROD: The worst is behind us

My 360 just RROD'd before Xmas. It was a launch model so it was out of even the extended warranty. Typical. They wanted me to pony up £78 for a repair.

No.

Not for a problem they're responsible for.

Not while my PS3 can play most of the same games.

Shame. I was really looking forward to The Lost and the Damned and quite a few XBLA games.

So that's the end of the Xbox brand in this house. Fool me once and all that.

New Apple Store coming to Leicester

Jul 21st 2008 7:14AM (TUAW.com)
"There's one opening in Victoria Square in September, it's been common knowledge for months."

I was wondering what the timeframe for that was. Last I heard of it was months ago simply that it was coming.

September is confirmed then? Which Unit are they going to be in? One of the big ones I hope.

Ars Technica unboxes a new iMac

@miguel: Yep, gonna have to agree here. I am a month old switcher having purchased in late June and I honestly believe I dodged a bullet there, it looks an awful lot like my TV. It's not ugly per se but it's just uninspired.

Claymation + puppy kicking = GTA parody

iceatcs, if you have sattelite or cable, you may be pleased to know that [adult swim] will appear on Bravo( obviously CN in the UK couldn't risk it and so sold it to another station) RC will almost certainly appear at some point

US hardware sales in May: PS2 on the rise, 360 takes a dip [update 1]

Jun 9th 2006 7:00PM (Joystiq)
I don't know if this is anything for the sony fanboys to be cheery about, in fact they probably should be concerned.

I wouldn't be surprised if this equates to a loss of interest in ps3 by those still on the fence.

for every PS2 sold at this point is one less ps3 sold this christmas.
Personally I wouldn't be surpised if the the PS2 outsold its successor this year.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup (April 23 - April 29)

May 1st 2006 7:17AM (Joystiq)
Penny Arcade, Penny Arcade, Penny Arcade. What happened to you? That has got to be the worst strip they have ever produced. Must've taken all of 30 seconds to come up with that one, eh? These guys are funny? It's like it's some kind of bad fan strip or something.

Gamer feels cheated by FFXI's sneaky hidden fees [update 1]

Apr 24th 2006 7:51AM (Joystiq)
seifer, you just put in to words my entire thoughts on the situation. you are so right on many fronts.

I couldn't understand why anyone would think FFXI was failing. If it was, why spend money on porting it to another platform(and considering it has to work smoothly with the pc and PS2 versions as weel(thats why the graphics haven't changed) and create a new expansion for all platforms to release with it.

liked the real gamer comment too, feel the same way myself. You're only harming your own enjoyment of games by being a fanboy and denying yourself the full spectrum of awesomeness that is gaming.
