Sega canceling games, cutting jobs in US and Europe to restructure [update: SOA statement]

Whatever little slimmer of hope I had of Valkyria Chronicles 3 being localized has been destroyed.

Sony confirms Zipper Interactive closure

I really loved MAG so this is a shame. It was a great game that suffered from lack of polish and content.

Recently revealed Vita games already cancelled (good thing they were fake!) [update]

@(Unverified) Because Sony totally decides which GTA games R* wants huh...?

So far, so good: Why the Vita rises where the PSP fell

Mar 2nd 2012 4:34PM (Joystiq)
@CaramelZappa And yeah, the prices will go down. Sony doesn't have any direct competitors, but they do have one thing to worry about: the used games market. If they don't lower their prices, then resellers like Amazon and GameStop will provide cheaper alternatives and constantly bite into Sony's share. The reason Microsoft didn't face this problem was because of the unreliability and low life-span of hard disk drives. HDDs have very key flaws that prevented them from being a fast-selling used good: they break quickly (especially since they're portable) compared to flash memory, they contain sensitive information that must be wiped with special software as opposed to true reformatting flash memory provides, and a low life-span compared to the nearly eternal life-span of flash memory.

The card prices will fall. Whether it's Sony doing the price cuts or the used games market offering better prices, either way they will become much more affordable than they currently are.

@CaramelZappa I have a 8gb card and right now it's holding:
1. Hot Shots Golf Vita
2. Lumines: Electronic Symphony
3. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
4. Patapon 2
5. Crush
6. Ridge Racer Portable
7. Escape Plan
8. Super Stardust Delta
9. LittleBigPlanet
10. Tales from Space: Mutant Blob Attack
11. Plants vs. Zombies

That's more games than I can currently handle, all fully downloaded. That's not even including the update data for Uncharted Golden Abyss (over 300 mb) and the rest of the games on that list. Seriously, that's a huge list.

@CaramelZappa Well first off, the reason the cards are expensive is because Sony developed them specifically to combat piracy. Their choices were to either us completely internal memory like Apple and restrict consumer freedom, use non-proprietary media like the PSP or Android and face the same piracy problem that plagued the PSP, or pour money into R&D and try to make a removable card that could still be secure. Personally I'm glad they went for the third choice, because the prices will go down in time but scaring away developers with piracy will make my whole console useless and only allowing internal memory would mean I would have to buy a whole new console if I want more storage.

The prices for the cards will go down in time. For now, I can't imagine 4 or 8gb not being enough for anyone.

@A Sandwich Low? Have you done your research? That's completely normal. Exactly how many people do you know buy more than 2 new games with a brand new console? You must be rolling with some spendthrift people if they're buying significantly more than 2 games.

@DekuTree The 3DS launched for $250 with Street Figheter IV, Nintendogs, Pilotwings, and Steel Diver. Overall it had 9 launch titles.

The Vita launched for $250 with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Rayman Origins, Lumines, and Super Stardust Delta. Overall it had over 25 launch titles, with a variety of genres, prices, and format. It's the biggest console launch in PlayStation history

This isn't even taking into account the fact that Vita has a larger, higher resolution screen, near perfect viewing angles, excellent color saturation, option to download retail games for 10% off, responsive dual touch capacitive panels, longer battery life, dual analog sticks (built-in and not nubs), and obviously, more than four times the raw processing power of the 3DS.

I love Nintendo, and I love Sony. I loved my DS far more than my PSP. However, the launches between these two systems are not even comparable. The 3DS has been building up some good games like Super Mario 3D Land and Resident Evi: Revelations, but those took almost an entire year to surface. The Vita has hit the ground running with Uncharted, with hits equal in magnitude coming in mere months such as Unit 13, Resitance, LittleBigPlanet, Gravity Rush, Killzone Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, and more. I love my Zelda 3DS, but the Vita has clearly won this launch battle with far more value, titles, and flexibility than the 3DS.
