Splitfish FragFX Shark preview: elegant weapon for a more civilized age

Nov 6th 2010 5:41PM (Joystiq)
The fragFX shark is the supreme being in my collection at the moment - I have never been a fan of the fragnstein (mostly because it just is not that good - but doubly because they were busted for copying Splitfish Tech and are a bit slimy) - and I do not have any idea what the FragX is - what is that?

I don't have the retail FRAGFX SHARK - but I have a beta and it is a huge step up from some of the past Splitfish gear. No rumble - (and I am pretty sure the retail is the same) but the performance of the mouse is super accurate and fast as hell. The other peatures for programming are all set up on the chuck and really easy to initiate - the button swap is the best feature for me, but you have macros, turbo setups and stick swap. It's a plug and play for mac and pc too - and definitely holds its own as a gaming mouse. My buddy just got his order yesterday, so they are shipping them out already. The battery life is un frickn real - seriously. I have used it 30/40 hrs without replacing my recharges. 1 AA in each.

SplitFish FragFX controllers continue to evolve, now more fishy

@ps3freak
I officially on a group to test the new controllers - and have a V2 as well- and I can tell you it works fine with the 3.50 update - x button and all -

If there is a problem I would email splitfish support.

I do know that the there are FAKE CHINESE PIRATE v2's sold by the same guys who copied the Splitfish code for some other fake controllers - these do not work.

Make sure you have an OFFICIAL controller - If you do - support will help you if it is defective - because if it is authentic it should work fine.

@ps3freak - Sony updates were aimed at disabling some knockoff dual shocks - who can blame them? - The updates haven't knocked out any current Splitfish releases. I don't know why Sony would want to - A mouse combo is the reason many play FPS on PS3 - FRAGFX complement the experience and allows a lot of PC gamers a big comfort level playing in the PS3 community. I am pretty sure sony is happy to let unique and innovative hardware developers help them sell PS3's - and I certainly think the FRAGFX falls in that category.

PS3 firmware 3.50 disables some USB peripherals, consumers report

@Edge of Blade
Sorry - I meant to reply here :)

I think Sony is aiming at direct knockoffs of the Dualshock - not legit unique gameware like the FRAGFX V2 - Which incidentally works perfect even after the update -

-all the other current SPLITFISH gear works too.
I think some of the (ironically) pirate (yes - someone in china has been pirating an old version 1 of discontinued splitfish product from a few years back) don't work - I think the bannco stuff they copied from Splitfish was also knocked out.

I can tell you for sure the FRAGFX V2, PRO, EVO and SHARKBETA all operate perfectly after the new Sony update.

I know that the design of the FRAGFX is to compliment FPS on the PS3 and give FPS PC crossover gamers a reason to play on PS3 - It's not competition to Sony.

@zDD Ok - just finally got my hands on the Shark Beta - It is SWEEEET! I see now that you can just set up your PC buttons in the keyboard remap - I get it. Yes - this is better than the v2. and (ahem) much better than the pro. Just sayin' ;)

@zDD - Thanks for the confirmation video dude! Hope you are right. BTW - How did it work for you on the PC? Also - can you program enough KB buttons on the controller to make it feel natural on PC as far as standard functions go?

@whatthegeek - Theoretically you would think that could be possible on PC or MAC - that would be an interestingthing to test. The SHark mouse shown at Gamescom appears to be super accurate - so I have high hopes for the retail versions. It is hard to let go of a mouse you love the feel of though -I totally get that.

@tampawrx - definitely not my experience or opinion about Bannco - The FnS simply does not perform nearly as well as any new FragFx - I don't know if you have had a chance to try it - I try to get on to test any new FPS products for PS3 or xbox (I have XPS too) - I have a Bannco FnS and I can say definitively - Splitfish is ahead of the game with their newest hardware by far if you compare any of the latest updated FragFx --- also - Bannco just got busted for copying Splitfish tech. Sorry - I support Splitfish developments (officially ;)
