Ceton is set to take over the CableCARD PC tuner market

Sep 11th 2009 4:12PM (Engadget HD)
My local cost for renting an HD-DVR STB from the cable co is $15+. This one card offers as much recording cabability as two STBs and considerably more capability in storage and playback options. A 10 - 20 month break even point is more than acceptable to me.

The GefenTV Digital Audio Decoder -- an answer to a question we're afraid to ask

Jun 9th 2009 9:37PM (Engadget HD)
The price isn't cheap, but the size and simplicity is good. Send digital audio around on one cable is a nice wiring scheme, but sometimes you need to get back to 2.0 analog without having a whole A/V rack in place.

Are there any other products in the vein out there?

>>In fact, you should be able to gang several of these boxes together and distribute multiple channels of ATSC video to your TVs, creating your own in-home broadcasting station.

I've noticed a couple references to this possibility. But another comment mentioned that the box is set to particular frequency for output onto your internal coax. Is that frequency changeable? If not, wouldn't that impose a limit of just one box on a coax systems? (I guess some buildings have multiple parallel coax feeds, but I suspect most TVs don't have more than one ATSC/QAM jack/tuner anyway.)

All that being noted, I can't believe that they'd overlook making the output frequency changeable for a rack-mount/prosumer style device, even if the original product was locked to a single frequency.

Either way, I am definitely interested in this device.

MLB Network goes live tomorrow, January 1st

Jan 1st 2009 7:51AM (Engadget HD)
NFL Network has only 8 games...For NFL net, that's a little over 3% of total league matchups. while MLB net will open with just over 1% of total match ups.

However, there are way more games to be covered after the fact, as either replays of recent games of note, and of historical games. NFL Net does this too.

Add in minor league coverage, college coverage, international events and there's a lot there.

Blockbuster selling oodles of HD DVDs for $7.99 a pop

Dec 30th 2008 3:41PM (Engadget HD)
If you've already invested in a substantial HD-DVD library, $50 for a backup player might not be a bad deal. (woot.com has had a stand alone HD-DVD player a couple times for ~$50.) The included TV series packages are decent for the total package price--or you could always sell them off again.

There's one component input, too (as well as composite & s-vid). At least for the 19"er. that is; I didn't check the specs on the larger ones.
