Right, and maybe if Remote Play worked with more than 2 games, you'd have a point. The problem with all of your examples is that Sony never knew how to bring any of that shit to market before Nintendo made it viable. Here's a parable:
Christopher Columbus was dining with many Spanish nobles when one of them said: 'Sir Christopher, even if your lordship had not discovered the Indies, there would have been, here in Spain which is a country abundant with great men knowledgeable in cosmography and literature, one who would have started a similar adventure with the same result.' Columbus did not respond to these words but asked for a whole egg to be brought to him. He placed it on the table and said: 'My lords, I will lay a wager with any of you that you are unable to make this egg stand on its end like I will do without any kind of help or aid.' They all tried without success and when the egg returned to Columbus, he tapped it gently on the table breaking it slightly and, with this, the egg stood on its end. All those present were confounded and understood what he meant: that once the feat has been done, anyone knows how to do it.
I think you're the one letting hyperbole get in the way of facts. For example, if Vita sales "exceeded expectations" what were the original expectations? No, seriously, do you know? Of course you don't. And here's the thing, it's NOT selling well. At all. Launch was poor and the follow up has been abysmal. Getting outsold 7:1 by 3DS every week in Japan? That's not good. I prophesy that the PS3 will launch with slightly higher specs than the Nextbox but will be difficult to develop for, will rip-off the Wii U controller, and will sport a premium price.
I don't think that's accurate but even if it is, I'm fine with it. Who wants a Ps2/Xbox/GameCube generation again? Most boring gen in gaming history. This generation has brought so many innovations that it was hard to keep up. Besides, I don't think the leap is going to be as crazy as you think. I believe Microsoft has learned that interface is king, whether that be through online or gameplay. I would be surprised if they went crazy, spec-wise. Sony, well, I think the Vita proved that they haven't learned their lesson yet. I think they'll launch with a $500 machine that will last for ten years and that no one but a few first-party studios will take advantage of.
I bought a PSP because I was so enchanted by the idea of Remote Play. Nothing good ever came of it. A huge part of my Vita purchase also revolved around Remote Play. But I've come to terms with the fact that it will never be implemented in a good way. It's my fault, really, not Sony's. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...
