Jul 3rd 2011 9:43PM (Joystiq)The problem that exists is that the science proving any of these claims is simply not there. We have no evidence of violent games directly leading to violence. The studies are ambivalent at best on the topic. The science is also highly unlikely to ever produce anything resembling a smoking gun to "prove" this.
The minors that "shouldn't" buy these games are given the money by adults. In the end, it's the adults alone who should control this. Gaming has done all that is possible to limit access of games to kids and, sorry to break it to nannies like Yee, have not marketed these kinds of games to kids in a long, long time.
If you were to propose similar legislation for R rated movies --- you wouldn't see R rated movies in theaters any longer as the risk of loss FAR outweighs the potential for profit. This would provide a materially negative impact on me for a problem that does not exist.
So, because I am quite capable of controlling what games my kids can play, I will be unable to play mature titles because OTHER parents aren't competent enough to do their job for themselves? Hardly seems like a good trade-off to me and not one that will lead me to ever say "Sure, let's go ahead and limit that" --- especially given that government's primary goal is to increase its own power and this banishment will hardly be the only one.
Some pols will always attempt to attack games. Facts aren't important when you can demagogue and this will get positive press amongst people who do not know better. It has nothing to do with science or protecting kids --- it is done solely to make parents believe these otherwise useless lumpen mesomorphs are "doing something".

Jul 3rd 2011 6:18PM (Joystiq)Give ALL IP a 10-year copyright --- much like prescription drugs. If it's good enough for a company pouring untold millions into a drug, it's good enough for a pot-addled comedian writing a crap movie script.
