Jan 27th 2007 11:47PM (Joystiq)Remember the Donkey Kong video where the camera crew bumrushed in on an out of focus screening of Killer Instinct? Remember when you saw BLOOD coming out of the fighters and you went "WHAT THE HELL?! NINTENDO?!?" ... good times.

Wii developer: publishers wary of creating for Nintendo
Jan 25th 2007 3:57PM (Joystiq)If you look at the current software charts, Nintendo is all over the map. But what you have to take into account is that they don't focus on ONE GENRE (Squenix and Capcom, I'm looking at you). Their software hits a plethroa of demographics. That is why they chart. "Nintendo fans" still buy 3rd party software. The numbers are reflective of the inherent QUALITY of that software and the DEMOGRAPHICS they're hitting. Mature content could be done on any Nintendo, if more of it was done earlier to grow that market (why RE4 failed on the GC).
If you look at the PS2's numbers, the big companies are just like Nintendo. They chart and cannibalize small companies. They put up Nintendo like numbers because 1) they're hitting the proper demographic and 2) they're using their quality software to drive sales. When you put up shady off-shoots (or heaven forbid a freaking remake), it will not sell anywhere near as well as your "official" product.
If 3rd party companies want to make sales, they need to expand their portfolio. In the case of the DS, rehashing your old favorites just won't work. There are enough "mature" demographic gamers who want blood and guts but because of the very nature of the DS, there needs to be a higher level of interaction and pick up and play on the DS. Nintendo charts, yes, but only two or three of their games are "old genres." The others are quirky, non-games, something that Nintendo did right and people buy because they trust the quality. If Capcom and Konami want to succeed there, they need to do some of the same games. I'm not saying people won't buy their traditional games on the DS... but they won't if its a rehash or an offshoot that has nothing in common with the main game other than name (the new RE for the DS).
The same goes for the Wii. Independent studios are going to sell well (comparatively speaking)... not because Nintendo fans support independents, but because they're doing something interesting that's not a remake, a rehash, or a spin-off. Why buy Metal Gear Solid 3 for the Wii when I already have it for the PS2? Give me something original and you'll see me buying your games.
So 3rd party can blame themselves. They do horribly on Nintendo systems, not because people buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games, but because they put shoddy, low quality software on a the system at the start and then when they put quality (RE4) on the system, the demographic isn't there (you grew it somewhere else). Higher quality software and more variety in your software will give you a higher profit margin and expand your portfolio. Stop living in the damn past.

New Wii owners: your impressions?
Nov 20th 2006 2:23AM (Joystiq)Where have all the nunchuks gone? [update 1]
Nov 19th 2006 7:56PM (Joystiq)It starts up but it doesn't go anywhere but to the Insert Start up Disc screen. I was actually expecting to have to start up my computer (My WiFi USB device is on it) and have it update that way... was thinking that's what it was waiting for me to do but nope, it's a widespread problem. It seems that some of the units were supposed to be store demo units that were packaged and shipped as sell-able units. Really sucks, so I'm hoping for a Wed delivery date but after my night (locked my keys in the car, Wii doesn't work) I'm almost thinking Friday or even Saturday will be the day I get my Wii.
Where have all the nunchuks gone? [update 1]
Nov 19th 2006 6:18PM (Joystiq)Folks will more than likely go into a lot of stores and buy games before they get the console (or buy games for people who already have it). There will always be a surplus of games per console... after all, the games are how you make the real money (though Nintendo is making a profit on the razor and the blades).

That reader was me. I also sent in a picture.
The box I have has a sticker over the original wording. If you have a box without a sticker, then you're in the clear, but if you don't and haven't hooked up the system, you may be in for a treat like I was.
Now, Kevin, who's the idiot? Oh wait, you. Moron. Keep flaming though. Your maturity does wonders for your online AND real world image.
