Sony and PlayStation 3 jailbreaker George Hotz settle out of court
Apr 11th 2011 12:42PM (Joystiq)And it doesn't keep him from doing anything. He can easily buy a used NGP, still boycott, and hack it anonymously like most intelligent hackers. He was doing it publicly only to make a statement. Like it or not, the statement has been made and people who like their civil rights and dislike corporate greed and control were listening.

Jan 31st 2011 8:16PM (Joystiq)- CONSOLE security DOES NOT equal ONLINE security. Games like MW went down because they stupidly relied on CONSOLE security. Any publisher worth their salt relies on ONLINE security.
- Doing ANYTHING to your OWN EQUIPMENT is NOT illegal. Writing software to make it easier and then sharing it publicly IS illegal.
- Hacking into your own equipment DOES NOT EQUAL online hacking. I see a lot of comments equating this to theft. Sony sold the PS3 to you and that includes everything therein just like owning the software on your games. SHARING it publicly is illegal.
- It is not illegal to lend a game to your friends. The problem arises from the fact that you can copy the game and share it with your best friend, the internet. This is illegal, but it does spurn on advances in distribution technology. More and more games are being distributed digitally, or in the case of OnLive, not distributed at all. If you don't want to sell the software, don't sell the software. You can't give out copies without being able to copy. You CANNOT have your cake (internet, ownership, and freedom of information) and eat it too (prevent communication, piracy, and information sharing).

Jan 31st 2011 6:07PM (Joystiq)I really don't understand why no one gets this. If you sell me a piece of equipment I can do what I want with it.
Although, publicly distributing a way to do the work I did, IS illegal. People seem to confuse those two points. However, it isn't illegal for me to tell my friend about it, just as it is not illegal to borrow a game from him. And now technology has made the world your best friend. Get used to it. You can't have your cake (internet) and eat it too (keep people from sharing).
