Jul 21st 2007 6:07PM (Joystiq)
Call of Duty 4? What's that? Oh, you mean "High Res Simon Says":

Joystiq impressions: Rise of the Argonauts

"RPG without the clutter."

That's what Fable was supposed to be. Hopefully these guys can actually pull it off.

Dave Perry: Wii won't last, gamers want prettier games

Jul 21st 2007 5:55PM (Joystiq)
I agree that the Wii is little more than a gimmick, HOWEVER, I see the 360 and PS3 as the exact same thing. Higher resolution? Bah! They're all overrated gimmicks this generation.

That said, systems like the PS2 and the original GameBoy proved perfectly well that having the most powerful hardware counts for jack shit. Just like people were chanting last generation, but have since conveniently forgotten, "It's about the games."

Ok, so lets talk about the games. The Wii has little that really stands out. I'm a Zelda fan and even I found Twilight Princess to feel like a rehash of Ocarina of Time. But the 360's lineup is no better. It has Gears of War and umm, what else? I've played Lost Planet, Rockstar Table Tennis, Call of Duty, Project Gotham, Ridge Racer and Geometry Wars: all overrated garbage. Saint's Row and Crackdown: Meh, I've already played GTA. Tony Hawk, Splinter Cell, and Guitar Hero: Already have them on last-gen systems. Halo, Forza, Dead or Alive, FarCry,
Tetris, and Katamari:
High-res versions of games *I've already played*.

Yes, the 360 does have some good games on the way, but so does the Wii and, hell, even the PS3.

My main point: All the systems suck about equally.

As for Dave Perry: the only time his company put out anything worthwhile was all the way back with the original Earthworm Jim. MDK and Wild 9: Overrated. Sacrifice and Messiah: Meh. Matrix: Crap. What the hell does he know?

"what makes games gorgeous is the artistic direction, not tech specs"

Well said.

"I don't need prettier games, I just need less shitty games."

Also well said.

John Carmack continues to eyeball the DS, considers Quake-style game

Man, let's hope so. It's about time id put out another game that doesn't rely on ridiculous amounts of upgrading. The last time was what, Doom?

Molyneux heavily alludes to co-op in Fable 2

Jul 13th 2007 3:37PM (Joystiq)
"Molyneux says there will not be a birthing minigame."

Aww, shucks. I guess I'll just have to hope for a third "Feel The Magic" ;)

"What's with all the original Fable hate? Not just from him, but in general there seems to be a sudden backlash against it."

I got it when it came out and was very disappointed with it.

BTW, what's with this comment posting software? I have to post the same thing twice before it'll actually go through.

PSP firmware 3.60 reveals hidden USB Charge feature

Ahh! So the UMD Caching IS system-wide after all, which would seem to imply that it *will* work with existing games. Excellent!

Now if only they release another update which can display games via composite, I'll be ready to buy one of these things :)

Also, umm, somewhat offtopic, and I hate to be a stick-in-the-mud, but that animating favicon is REALLY annoying... Kinda takes me back to the 90's (and not in a good way).

Sony not cutting price in Europe ... ouch!

"Hey, at least for this they've got universal healthcare, ... we're just trying to find the silver lining in this. Sorry."

Speaking as an American, that really is one damn good silver lining. Scratch that - more like diamond.

What? You mean Sierra still exists?

Joystiq hands-on with the new PSP

Jul 12th 2007 9:38PM (Joystiq)
Perhaps, but supposedly the UMD movies are also 480p, and they said that'll work over composite.

Another thought: Maybe this is something that would/could get fixed via firmware update? They certainly do a lot of that firmware updating.

Joystiq hands-on with the new PSP

Jul 12th 2007 6:53PM (Joystiq)
"Component or composite cables can be used for TV out, but Koller explains that PSP game output will only be component-compatible."

Why in the world would they do this? Can someone explain to me the rationale for having composite output, but then disabling it for games? I can't even think of a smart-ass reason!
