Phantasy Star Online 2 is free-to-play, also coming to smartphones

Apr 2nd 2012 3:12PM (Joystiq)
@SgtDookie

Their game policy is to ensure that by playing for free there will not be any restrictions on what class level you can go up to. They will not allow the direct sales of highly over powerful weapons (and such) for large sums of cash either.

For example, there will be a campaign to receive select game items from purchasing particular Microsoft and Intel products. These items are not intended to rob the motivation of players since these weapons are not powerful, and the same kinds of items will eventually drop sometime after the official game starts.

Lets go over this one more time, and I really hope someone in Wikipedia would add this to the website:

P2P - Pay To Play - You buy the game, and there is a subscription involved. May or may not have micro-transactions.
B2P - Buy To Play - You buy the game, and no subscription fee is involved. May or may not have micro-transactions.
F2P - Free To Play - The game is free to download, with no subscription fee, yet makes money using micro-transactions.

"Sega is embracing the future for its pricing model -- the infinitely expensive, vaguely annoying future."

If this is your way of jumping on the "F2P Bashing wagon", just shove it!
Not all F2P games suck! Besides, With the recent announcement of NA/EU getting downsized because of loss of profits, this is the best move they could have ever made, especially if we get to see an EPIC PSO2 announcement at E3!

"I can't imagine them just selling off aesthetic stuff; there is no way that would give them a profit." Team Fortress 2! As soon as TF2 went free-to-play, %300 more profit than before. Proved wrong, soo hard.

You were going to pay an upwards of $60 for the game anyways, RIGHT? I doubt on the first day, they were going to have $60 worth of PAID content in the store. So just use the money you were going to use to buy this game, and pay for the cash shop items. If you don't like the items, then just don't buy them... and play the game for free. Problem solved.

I still want SEGA to make money. Though I'm interested in the kind of items they will have to offer... we will wait and see.

There will however be cash items, but Sakai isn’t going to allow direct sales of advantage-based items such as highly over powerful weapons. He said that, not me. ;D

Sega canceling games, cutting jobs in US and Europe to restructure [update: SOA statement]

Ok, even though I was quite upset about the possibility, I also had to take a moment to think… and as I was doing so… some guys over at PSO-WORLD.com posted this:

“PSO2 will be released in America. Think about it, they will focus on DIGITAL CONTENT. What is PSO2? DIGITAL CONTENT. They are most likely using PSO2 as an example of their reconstructing method.”

“To further emphasize that, PSO2 is pretty much Sega’s biggest digital content project ever, spanning PC, Vita, and iOS/Android devices. That’s a pretty big digital distribution project.”

“I really hope we get an epic PSO2 announcement at E3.”

I hope so too, DerpiestShazbot, I hope so too.

PSO has always been Instance based, instead of Open World. The people who truly Love this series understands the difference between them both. Yes, the PC allows for the game to be better graphically, and certainly graphics are important. However, they aren’t making this game to show off a tech demo, they want to make a game for everyone to enjoy. Sakai wants players to feel the sensation of surprise, discovery, and adventure once more. Not only does he want to capture those familiar to the series, but he wants to introduce a game that’s fun and interesting to those inexperienced with online games. This was started to allow players with PCs to readily play the game. There’s no need for you to think that you need the latest PC to play because the game’s graphics can be adjusted. PSO2 faces many challenges and one of the challenges is to focus on those who don’t play PC games. (Since people are misinterpreting this, it means to convert those who are unwilling or afraid to play PC games. This has nothing to do with a console version.)

Phantasy Star Online 2 delayed into 2012

Phantasy Star Online 2 delayed into 2012

I sure would like to know where Jordan Mallory is getting his info. Nowhere did SEGA announce that Phantasy Star Online 2 is a Japanese Exclusive. August 19, Assistant Producer, Bonkohara, answered the question with, and I quote: "We would like to release the game all over the world, but we have not decided on a schedule." And there are points brought up prior to the media briefing... one of them being Global Servers, which is still not set in stone yet, however, confirmed that it is a possibility.
