Mass Effect 3 director defends DLC, endings with 'common sense'
Mar 15th 2012 3:25AM (Joystiq)Sure... life is messy and we don't always get the answers we want or no answers at all, but this is a story that doesn't have to follow the rules of reality and CAN give the audience every answer they've ever wondered. As a matter of fact, isn't that the point of having a powerful and unforgettable ending? Even with some of the more controversial endings of series and movies out there, they all end with a majority of the major questions being answered. If they don't then it's probably an art house movie that said all it needed to say... but this aint an art house movie! We aren't playing a Stanley Kubrick game here, Hudson. It's Mass Effect - Bioware's attempt at creating a Star Wars competitor. Star Wars didn't end with a beam shooting from the Death Star, the rebellion ships flying around, and then fading to black. It's a fun, action packed adventure that isn't trying to let the audience guess what happened at the end of their movie.
Hudson should ask himself this: Even if it is supposed to an open-to-interpretation ending, and the gamers don't like it, can it still be considered good? Can I deny them their opinions?
...he certainly seems to think so.
General rule of thumb in the future Bioware: make your endings actual endings and leave no mystery to it whatsoever. It's a game!
One reason Fez has taken five years to make, has already won awards
Mar 12th 2012 1:58AM (Joystiq)I'll admit that my response was harsh but I wasn't wishing death on him. I was saying that I want him gone from the industry until either he learns how to respect people's questions in an open forum or dies and we all hear about because he made Fez (and possible some other games afterwards). I don't see anything that implies I want him to die.
Also, he wasn't just "kind of disrespectful", he was blatantly and proudly disrespectful and continues to stand behind his disposition. So much to the point that many other people in the crowd, right next to the Japanese developer, were practically rallying against the guy.
The bottom line that I was trying to get to, and the reason why people like me who post stuff on the internet aren't in the same category (which is why you labeling me as a hypocrite doesn't quite work), is that he is someone who people will listen to. People came to that room to listen to him talk. He inherently has some power over the crowd. That entails some responsibility. Sorry to sound all Uncle Ben over here but it's the honest truth.
It's not an excuse for being vulgar on internet comments, which I don't think I was compared to some other people, but I really have no power whatsoever to get people to rally behind me. The people who up-voted the anti-Fish comments could be giving in to "mob mentality", even though I always thought that term mandated a physical mob to be proven, or they could actually have some empathy for the Japanese developer who got his a$$ handed to him because he asked what the guy thought about the Japanese gaming industry. I personally think it's the latter.
I know that if I had asked someone in the industry who I respected, even in the slightest, a public question and he/she said something along the lines of what Fish stated... I would be devastated and incredibly embarrassed. So I still think Fish is an a$$hat and needs to learn some respect and manners in the eyes of the public. Oh yeah... and he needs to learn how to apologize properly. He might if he gets rich enough and hires a personal PR person.
The importance of playtesting: What Portal 2 could have been
Mar 12th 2012 1:43AM (Joystiq)I'm glad that they realized their error(s) in the end and were able to deliver another amazing game - even though I still hold that it was far more self indulgent than its concise predecessor. These kinds of stories make me wonder what else happened at other studios for projects that I am currently in love with. ...or like what really happened between Capcom and Ninja Theory for DMC.

Mar 7th 2012 3:29AM (Joystiq)Does he not realize that being a jerk openly could potentially affect sales? Or worse yet: your as-of-yet undeserved and non-existent reputation can and will be tarnished. Who the hell wants to do business with some punk ass who says an entire culture of video games suck?
The smarter thing to do is to simply say: "I'm sorry, but I haven't been a big fan of Japanese games personally, so I can't really comment on how the industry is doing over there."
What really makes it bad is that he isn't even apologetic to the Japanese individual who had almost the entire crowd rallying against him and his line of work. This shit head Fish doesn't realize what words can do. Mob mentality is scary and he needs to watch what he says when there are a lot of people listening.
Just because of his lack of finesse and tact, I hope this smear disappears from the gaming world after Fez is released. ...until he learns how to respect people in an open forum or dies. Either one.
Ninja Gaiden 3 to require online pass [Update: Confirmed!]
Mar 6th 2012 5:46PM (Joystiq)It sucks but this is what publishers and developers want: don't buy used. What makes me worried, personally speaking, is if this kind of thing will get out of hand. It sounds like a slippery slope fallacy every time I think about it but I would hate to see publishers and developers forcing used copies to purchases pieces of single player campaign for extra pieces of money just because they didn't buy it new. I hope that day will never come.
Report: Next-gen Xbox to launch October/November 2013 with this GPU
Jan 26th 2012 4:03PM (Joystiq)The GPU is good enough for a console. It's already way ahead of the current 360 GPU and supports DX11 so what more would you want it to do? Have sex with you when you're lonely?
