The most expensive iPad apps

May 29th 2011 2:20PM (TUAW.com)
I'm not going to buy it, but I have looked with interest at this $140 app, which I could feasibly use in my job as a structural engineer... but I already have access to really expensive desktop software that can do all this and more: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/casa-space-frame-3d/id371089612?mt=8

But if I were an independent contractor and doing really simple structures, this might be worth the money.

McDwiff reads DWF files on your Mac or iPad

My office has sent DWFs to contractors or customers on occasion, but usually we convert to PDF and send those. The advantage of DWF is that you can measure lines and stuff a lot easier than you could with a PDF.

Netflix adds captioning to iOS apps

May 12th 2011 6:40PM (TUAW.com)
Yeah, it certainly feels like a web view, which I'm sure makes it easier for them to update things on the server side (such as the recent UI update of the iPad version that didn't require an actual app update), but it leads to such a poor user experience. Recently I launched the iPad app and for some version it reverted to showing me the regular Netflix website instead of the iPad formatted UI. Really strange.

Now if only they would make their app UIs much less stuttery and buggy...

Cultured Code releases Things Cloud Sync beta

May 5th 2011 12:00AM (TUAW.com)
To be fair, Things has lots of features tha Wunderlist doesn't - tags, areas of responsibility, recurring tasks, GTD buckets, etc. But... I also switched to Wunderlist, and I'm not missing any of those features except recurring tasks, which I have thrown into the wonderful Due.app. Wunderlist's effortless sync and platform ubiquity (including a web app) have won me over.

Macworld publishes first round of benchmark results for new iMac

May 4th 2011 4:32PM (TUAW.com)
Not pointless if you can find a used BTO 2010 iMac for about the same price as a brand new standard iMac.

Or configure it with SSD, be patient, and enjoy your super-fast app launching when your new iMac arrives.
