E3 2010: Massively's hands-on with TERA

Jun 20th 2010 1:31AM (Massively)
I tried Monster Hunter Tri as a side-game from playing WoW for about seven years...and now I can't even log into WoW, because it was made apparent to me how incredibly dull and boring it is to do the autoattack/watch mods/execute inane strats routine. I'm in love with timing/skill based combat now, which it looks like Tera will deliver. That's the main reason I'm following this game. The artwork is also great, although as someone mentioned above it's hard not to laugh at the revealing-armor trend. I've always found it silly: let's go into combat and only cover our private parts! Fully armored woman always look more badass and confident.

Anyways... while on the combat front it looks to break out from the old, stale, and IMO, outdated model a lot of MMO's still use, I'm still curious about the overall gameplay mechanics. Are we going to run into the same old dull tank-heal deal? I hope not, as it sounds like all players will have to move and avoid the boss and what not. If you're a healer in WoW you might as well disable your graphics since the main thing you watch is health bars, ugh. I hope it's much more dynamic than that.

Overall it looks great though! Looking forward to more information.

Hybrid Theory: What can I do? part 2

Mar 9th 2008 10:29AM (WoW)
It's articles like this that spread WoW Insider's reputation as something like a tabloid site/site not to be taken seriously

All the tanks are awesome now, and outside of gimmick fights, do everything equally well. It's the player behind the tank that counts. Pally tanks do more than MT content- they tank against the biased views of authors such as the one in this post

Also, Warriors are a hybrid Class as well, a two-fold one. That's where the article falls apart off the bat

In the end, it sounds like someone wrote this who never bought the expansion and is stuck in a pre-TBC, uneducated POV :)

btw, thanks to the folks who pointed out this article to me. If anyone who is actually looking for factual information about tank Classes, the comments here are better than the article

Video games blamed for lack of British soccer players

1-

And if someone goes off your comments, they won't say gamers are compromised of spiteful, angry kids that hate everything that isn't on available on their platform of choice?

For the article, it's not outside hobbies that are not bringing in the talent :)

PS3 Enchanted Arms gets some 'enchancements'

Some elements of the game don't appeal to everyone (especially given the market it's trying to hit via the console). No need to hate them for it and call them idiots since can't really relate to it/like it.

I watched someone play the first hour of it, and not only did I not find any of the characters interesting or appealing, the game just seemed like a generic RPG.

If the 360 wants in on the RPG action it needs to drum up some better titles. Hopefully Blue Dragon will do it for them.

New Irish tale spun with anti-gaming sentiment

So someone has an opinion that there are better things than video games? Oh man, we better stop that propaganda ASAP! We can't have people having different opinions than our group!

You sound a little *too* angry author! :)

I feel there are better things than games that are much simpler in nature, despite being an avid gamer. How that comes across as 'propaganda', I have no idea.

Mario & Peach can't shake gender stereotypes

Nov 16th 2006 4:38PM (Joystiq)
Huh? I thought video games had absolutley no effect on the psyche of individuals and shouldn't affect people who are full entreched in reality? Only the weak willed?

Make up your minds!

What if Peach is just an emotionally unstable person?

Those bottom screenshots are fake. You guys are getting *way* too angry over this. It's easy and fun to get into make believe conspiracies, isn't it? :)

Here some actual screenshots. The BE's are more inline with the actual Warcraft artstyle. Try and see if you can tell a difference

DS schooling Japanese students

#10-

We use RIS and Deepfreeze :) Most errors come from the user, although sometimes it's just a terrible program design ("EZTest" by Mcgraw Hill...). There are alot of other variables too- whether the system can run it well (like with CAD/art programs), licenses, etc. Even downright retarded stuff: last semester we were told to give the basic profiles full rights "in case an instructor decides to teach from that console." You have to cope with stupidity as well

Overall though it's like comparing an installation of a game on your PC vs. a console. A console you just plug it, that's it, and doesn't require much more than that

As a computer tech at a college, installing educational software on computers sucks. An instructor will mess something up, if a lesson is being done over Netsupport the network will screw up somehow, and just installing it all can lead to suckage too when you have 100+ computers to monitor

Having something you can just plug into a hand held and know it will work without any setup, that a user of almost any tech literacy level can understand (and being able to Link and Mario on it) is awesome! Props to Japan

The Political Game: The Bully bash

Oct 20th 2006 1:34PM (Joystiq)
"Is a book protected speech? Of course. Could a book lay out a plan for hatred or mayhem? Yes. Can you buy Mein Kampf in Florida? The Anarchist Cookbook? Osama Bin Laden's Messages to the World?"

Would you let a kid read those? Are they created to entertain them?

No. That's why they're different from games. You know why educators/parents go after games? Because they have the perception that games are *marketed* to kids directly to buy and enjoy, or at the very least, the kid inside us. And alot of them are; games have grown from being a childhood pastime into something everyone can enjoy regardless of age

That however hasn't been realized by the general population yet as a whole, and the stereotype of games being "just for kids" is still there. When you go then and make a game named "Bully", what do you expect to happen?

"Bully" is an interesting game, and it looks fun. Even with a little "T" on it though, it's not going to beat current perceptions on gaming anytime soon, that evil, wrongdoing gamer designers are trying to tell our innocent kids corrupt messages :)

Obviously it's ultimatley up to parents to govern what their kids do and become less naive about the gaming industry. Expecting them to know all that *we* know as gamers about an industry they probably give less of a crap about, though, is naive on our part as well

Instead of crying about this on a blog that only gamers will see and finding "I AGREE!" across the board, why not make an effort to go inform those same parents about what this game really is where they roam? Like their PTA meeting? :P
