Verizon tells us all about the BlackBerry Storm's "WOW factors"

Oct 29th 2008 11:45AM (Engadget Mobile)
I have a Verizon wireless broadband card, and I can tell you that wifi would have been almost completely useless on the Storm. Verizon does not charge for data roaming for the broadband card in the US. The coverage is fantastic and the speed is very good. I'm expecting the same for the data plans on the phones but I've not confirmed this.

The only time I use WiFi on my laptop when I'm traveling is when I'm doing big downloads so I don't exceed the VZ 5GB limit (which is unlikely to be an issue on a cell phone). Otherwise, I much prefer to use the VZ card for consistency and security.

I've had 2 smart phones based on PocketPC in the past (both sucked) but currently have a VZ Blackberry 8830 for work which I'm very happy with. I also have a personal Samsung Sprint cell phone. I will likely switch my personal phone to Verizon in the near future because coverage is better than Sprint and Sprint does not have free call forwarding. I certainly will be looking at the Storm when it comes out, but I think it will need a good web browser to compete again the iPhone. The Storm is almost guaranteed to have better battery life and reception though!

Wii loses to PS3 in Japan during November

Dec 2nd 2007 3:25PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Nintendo should consider slashing prices to $199.

I know they are selling everything they make, so from the surface, it might seem like it doesn't make sense to cut prices, but the console wars is partly fought in volumes on units out there.

Having a price of $199, I think would help some people hold off on buying the PS3 over the Wii.

Rumor: 3rd party cables void the PS3 warranty

Jan 18th 2007 9:33PM (Joystiq)
The Magnuson-Moss warranty act says that Sony can NOT void their warranty unless the cause of the problem/breakage is due to the 3rd party product used.

Let me give you some examples. You put Mobile1 into your Ford instead of Motorcraft. Can Ford void your warranty? "No" says Magnuson-Moss Warranty act. You put Kenmore vacuum bags in your Hoover vacuum cleaner. That's OK too.

Now if the Kenmore vacuum bag breaks and cause damage to the motor on your vacuum, then you'd be SOL. However, the fact that you use an aftermarket vacuum bag does not void the warranty. The fact the aftermarket bag failed and caused the damage does void the warranty.

Ok, let me give you just a couple more examples:

You take a video card and swap the heatsink out for an aftermarket SUPER-DUPER-COOLER. Does that void the warranty? Yes, that's tampering with the product in a way that it was not intended to be used so the manufacturer can void the warranty.

However, if the video card manufacturer also sells a "upgradable heat sink" as a option that the user can buy and install, I would suggest to you that the may legally NOT void warranty if you decide to install an aftermarket heatsink. They can void the warranty if they see/prove that your aftermarket heat sink did not sufficiently cool the video card causing it to fail.

Similarly Sony can not void the warranty if you use a MadCatz controller with your playstation. Nor can they void the warranty if you use Panasonic TV instead of a Sony Trinitron. Now if your PanasonicTV has an electrical fault that blows up your Playstation, that won't be warranted by Sony if they can prove that happened. In the end that would be OK, because it means that you were destined to by a Wii.

Analyst: In-stock PS3s are "troubling"

Jan 11th 2007 10:05PM (Joystiq)
Sony doesn't get it.

PS3 looks like like filet mignon but taste like hamburger. They have great graphics, but are bland in game play.

I've been a gamer since pong (pre Atari 2600).
I've had numerous consoles over the last 2-3 decades and I think PS3 is simply bland and unexciting. Xbox isn't much better.

Wii got my money this round. I'm looking for something different and so far, Nintendo is delivering.
