Yamaoka scoring Grasshopper-developed Evangelion rhythm game
Jun 15th 2011 1:37PM (Joystiq)Also, the last two episodes were the result of creative differences and loss of budget. Eventually they were able to re-do the ending as a feature length film and it was even MORE bizarre, but it was at least more satisfying and has definitely gone down in history as one of the greatest anime movies of all time. Over the past few years they have been re-doing the series as condensed OAVs with a few plot/character tweaks and new developments and characters. The first two have come out and the third one will come out... eventually. The first two are excellent and seem to come a lot closer with what Anno seemed to intend originally while also making Shinji less annoying and making the plot a bit more coherent and focused.
I don't subscribe to the belief that all the crazy shit came out of nowhere. If you rewatch the series, you can see all of this stuff building up slowly, but because it's all hinted at and in the background, when it all comes to a head, you feel blind-sided by it. Anno certainly liked to mess with our heads, but I don't think he did it maliciously or out of some insane dark spell. I think he's just very abstract.

Wii U currently only supports one WiiPad
Jun 10th 2011 1:19PM (Joystiq)OK, I think I get it now. The WiiPad was probably initially designed to just be a peripheral. Something new to add to the Wii, kind of like Kinect with the Xbox 360. But then they realized that the Wii wasn't powerful enough to do it, so they decided to create a Wii with better hardware all so they can introduce this new peripheral.
It seems that despite the focus on the new WiiPad, the bulk of the playing experience will be identical to the current experience, just with improved graphics.
How underwhelming.

Silent Hill Downpour: now with three dimensions and one Korn song
Jun 9th 2011 1:05PM (Joystiq)The idea of Silent Hill ensnaring a convicted murderer is an opportunity for some truly excellent mind-raping of a main character. I mean, Silent Hill is best when the main character has a dark secret that tortures them and the town makes it come to life and attack them both physically and psychologically. Sure, we've had murderers before, but never convicted murderers. People who have not only killed other people, but have been forced to live in seclusion from the rest of the world because they were caught. This game, if handled well, could bring up a lot of interesting questions about the nature of criminals, murder, the justice system, and incarceration.
For the sheer potential of the plot summary, I'm willing to let the developers do what they want. "Shattered Memories" showed that Konami is ready to stop focusing on the hopelessly complex Silent Hill mythology and just focus on self-contained stories about a character who gets stuck in the town and has to confront their inner demons. That is good. "Downpour" seems to continue in that vein. If they can succeed where "Shattered Memories" failed (interesting monsters, no sense of safe haven, decent combat system), then the US developers might finally be able to reach the level of quality of the older games.
And if they think that Korn and Daniel Licht will help give them the atmosphere they are going for, then I say let them try it.
If it doesn't work, then oh well. It can't be much worse than some of the other recent Silent Hill games, and at least they tried to do something different.
