Pachter: Xbox 360 outsold PS3 two-to-one in December; Nintendo reveals numbers

@kgoo867

The lack of software support for the Wii has been a joke. It's been disgusting.

I bought a Wii, extra controller, stand, balance board, motion plus (never used one), Wii speak and whatever else. I have the full "kit". I bought this stuff because I assumed that they'd be supported but they haven't been, at least to a level even approaching what I would expect.

Where are the good balance board games? Where are the good motion plus games? Where are the good FPS games?

They haven't come.

My conclusion is that the Wii's motion controls simply don't work in the sense that they're simply not as effective for gaming as traditional gaming pads are. Or, to be more accurate, they may work if developers take advantage of the motion control technology and make them work - which they haven't.

Why don't we have a really good tennis game?

Nintendo have really let me down with the Wii. My first and last Nintendo. Further, given that it doesn't have HD the whole thing became completely useless as soon as I upgraded to a HD TV as the graphics on it are simply hideous. Throw in being ripped off by shovel ware games and the whole experience has been thoroughly unpleasant and a false economy.

@Cap Morgan

Nice response, although I found the "Now are we clear" a little unnecessary.

Your explanation seems to be that the initial uptake of the 360 was from previous Xbox owners and PC gamers looking for a console with good internet support.

In Oz, the PS3 was released at a very high price ($999 AUD) and then sat a reduced price but was also very high ($699 by memory). But at the same the 360 was pretty pricey too - can't remember exactly but I think it was $749 for a long time. Even now they're $449,only $50 less than the PS3. For me, as a long time PlayStation owner, there's simply no choice - the PS3 does have better internals, it has blu-ray, reliability and free online.

Sure I can understand that 360 owners wouldn't switch to a PS3, then benefit would be neglible and subjective, but as a new purchaser I'd have thought the PS3 was a very attractive proposition, both in the short term and long term.

Still, the numbers state that the 360 has consistently beaten the PS3 and I can't see that changing myself as I don't think the PS3 has anything more compelling to offer - there is nothing new on its way (apart from possibly the PSP 2 / PSP Phone adding some interactivity level).

I think ur right that Halo in particular has had a huge effect on the Xboxs' success. I think it's a game (franchise) that is hugely recognised and respected, and like u say, if the new purchaser only has a vague understanding of consoles then that can be a huge selling point - that all they know is that their friends play Halo.

Also I think that Microsoft must be well positioned moving forwards. They've got their customers in the habit of upgrading their hard drives, consoles, as well as paying annual subscriptions. They're getting their customers familiar with casual games and cutting edge motion controls. And alot of us will become very familiar with their mobile gaming platform before long.

Nintendo have utterly failed in creating new IPs and providing a robust online service. Sony have failed to keep market share and appear to have a weaker software solution than Microsoft.

It makes me think that moving forward the software platform is going to be the most important aspect of a console, and the hardware side of things less so. In which case the market will be playing to Microsofts strengths.

For what it's worth i'm very surprised by Microsofts success this generation, and Sonys failure. I don't get it myself, the PS3 seems the best option to me, by how far is of course subjective.

Given that many console formats have died a death (most recently the Wii), it's pretty important information for gamers. Having said that, it looks like all 3 manufacturers have done enough to stay in the industry for at least another cycle.

I don't think AC Brotherhood will make it - personally I cancelled my pre-order on that - same old, same old. Red Dead will make it - not that i've played it. God of War III will be there. ME2 will be there. Split/Second is deserving. The Kirby game maybe? Vanquish would be a nice one to get in the top 5. Other contenders = Starcraft II, Civ 5, Cut The Rope

DS Lite is still sold for $199 AUD in Australia. Proof we're being ripped off.
