Fiber optics get political in Australia as opposition party vows to scale down national broadband plan
Aug 10th 2010 10:16PM (Engadget)It was an election issue last election in Australia, so it's a bit of a shame that it's once again a factor. Personally I use mega fast ADSL2+ but I don't think plain vanilla ADSL speeds is bad at all. Do we all NEED to be able to download as much video content as we would like. Still, the internet is jolly important and it strikes me that Rudd (ex PM) was being rather progressive last election, and that the Libs just want to lower infrastructure costs perhaps so that they can redirect them to other areas that they think will win them a few more votes. I just can't trust the Libs.

I think you guys in the US are all over Netflix and Hulu and such but no one's told us about it yet.
Entelligence: Time for Microsoft to once again embrace and extend
Jul 11th 2010 10:53PM (Engadget)Yeah. You got to say that Microsoft seems to have alot of pull in this sector, if they do manage to get everything right. But still, the competition is very tough. If Nintendo drop a SIM into their 3DS, bam, game changed again.
Sony's Yoshida says PS3 is now turning a profit, no plans for a price cut
Jun 29th 2010 9:15PM (Engadget)Oh for sure they will. To me Sony have been very steady in their game. Each generation of the Playstation they've launched the best unit, and ensured that it has the best games. Sure, the best is subjective, but they certainly have followed a more steady path than Nintendo who (correctly) gambled on capturing the casual market, and Microsoft who released faulty hardware and paid too heavily for exclusives. Although Nintendo have done phenomenoly well this generation, and although Microsoft have put up a mighty fight, I think Sony can be confident that their Playstation brand has come through very well. In addition, it seems to me, as has been stated by all 3 manufacturers, that the current generation of consoles will last longer than previous iterations. From the last E3 it looks like the next batch of games will be a steady improvement but ultimately the same tier of quality. Perhaps we haven't seen the best of the PS3 yet, but we've certainly seen plenty it has to offer. And I think for now that's just fine as the technology does have so much to offer.
For me personally I'm currently scooping up PS3 games once they hit bargain basement price. I simply don't have the time to play them all, but I still have this burning desire to do so. So I can justify waiting for the big release games to fall to a quarter of their release price. As such, for me I'm in no hurry for the PS4. The games I already have, and the games that i'll be able to buy for bargain prices in the future will last me for several years or a decade before I'll feel the need to purchase a new console.

Jun 8th 2010 3:12AM (Engadget)But a mega powerful handheld might be just the ticket, especially if i can plug it into my LCD monitor easily enough, and especially if Nintendo eff up the protection system again.
Nintendo could be on to a real winner with this and they've done tremendously well in the handheld sector since forever.

Jun 7th 2010 10:56PM (Engadget)My Nokia n97 can do it (almost) all, but does so fairly slow and clumsily and falls down on games and general user interface. The Apple 3gS has struck me as being nearly there, but not quite. But with 5mp and a new better look, improved this and that, this looks to be the a smart phone that does actually work without comprimise. Or am I missing something?
