Panasonic G20 HDTV review shows plasma's still got it

Mar 3rd 2010 9:30AM (Engadget)
@EatingPie So I guess the 0.001% of consumers that pay for ISF calibration don't need to buy one. They can reduce themselves to buying LCD. I'll stick with a VIERA.

@LeeBongSmith Ok, how's this one for ya. It's essentially like buying a Samsung over a Panasonic (assuming equal cost) because the Panasonic loses black level over time. In the end the Panasonic is still better by a large margin.

Apple specifically going after Android in HTC lawsuit

Mar 2nd 2010 1:55PM (Engadget)
Sorry Apple, but Android is going to win in the end. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is an amazing piece of hardware and software, but it's only one phone on one (so far) carrier. Android is running on MANY phones on many carriers (soon to be even more). Android will win by sheer quatity.

@Cnizzle You do realize "LED" TVs are just LCD with LED backlighting right? I can't believe Samsung has successfully convinced the public that they're selling LED TVs. The only place you're going to find an LED display is in sports arenas and billboards.

@truename Good luck with your Samsung. I'll stick with Panasonic even with the black issues they're having. That just means that over time the VIERAs will go from having the best black levels by a HUGE margin to only having the best black levels by a large margin.

I can't believe people are concerned with the black level issue. It's essentially like buying a Kia over a Porsche (assuming equal cost) because the Porsche loses 5HP over time. In the end the Porsche is still better by a large margin.

Shuttle's XS35 nettop is 3.3cm thin, too nice to hide behind your HDTV

This thing looks really beautiful. And the best thing about it? Passively cooled, oh yeah.

VIZIO CEO claims the key to its low HDTV prices isn't cheap parts, just business strategy

Feb 3rd 2010 5:27PM (Engadget HD)
Vizio claims they use quality parts. Even if that's true, it still doesn't mean they build quality TVs. I can buy the best auto parts in the world and build a really crappy car with them. It's all in the engineering that determines the performance of your product. It starts with quality parts, but it doesn't end there.

@glennS Actually, saying a widescreen is wider or shorter in a physical sense is inaccurate. The ratio is different than a fullscreen TV, but the physical size of the TV is entirely dependent on the.....well....physical of the TV itself, obviously. A 65" widescreen TV sure isn't shorter than a 19" fullscreen TV, and a 30" widescreen TV sure isn't wider than an 80" fullscreen TV. Most consumers simply don't understand ratio, which is why, when they see letterboxing, they think they're missing the top and bottom half of the movie. 4:3 vs 3:2 vs 16:9 vs 1.85:1 vs 2.39:1 have been misunderstood by the general public since the beginning of film and it's not going to change anytime soon.

One megajoule laser brings nuclear fusion power closer to reality

Jan 28th 2010 1:00PM (Engadget)
@M3 So, you say to look elsewhere and then you say it's at least 50-75 years away from being a reality implying that we will get there eventually. So just because it's going to take a while to get there doesn't mean we should stop looking into it. If we stop looking into it, it will never happen.

Your statement is confusing. Either it is an alternative to fossil fuels, or it isn't, regardless of the time frame.
