Top Spin 4 is Move compatible, but 'not Kinect'
Jan 18th 2011 7:21PM (Joystiq)Here's how it will play out:
People will make more games that are built for the Wii and then ported to the PS3 with Move support. A fraction of these will also get really busted Kinect support for the 360 version, but this will only apply to minigame collections or otherwise simple games that don't require multiple input layers (IE managing movement simultaneously with actions and camera control). A few substantial games will be made for Move or at least support it, but half of them will be made with poor intentions and unsatisfactory execution.
"You are the controller" will be a really stupid phase we have to go through for a year or two in which nerds on internet forums constantly say "think of the possibilities" amidst a choppy tide of aggressively bad Kinect minigame collections, Kinect rail shooters, Kinect novelty applications that approach being cool but miss the mark due to a lack of buttons plus the simple fact that not everyone has a large living room, and unofficial Kinect hacks that use the device to create extremely awkward, barely usable control schemes for various first person shooters and the like.
People will continue saying these hacks are what real developers should do, basically because they aren't actually there in the room playing said games with hacked Kinect controls. The next generation of consoles will eventually come around and a combination of a Kinect-like camera with a 2 piece controller will be the actual future of motion controls rather than the poorly thought out "no controller required" concept. Games in these future systems can opt to rely on controller-less input but any even remotely substantiated games (IE anything that's not a minigame collection or a rail shooter) will require use of whatever wand/remote/nunchuck combination is offered.

Jan 11th 2011 6:38PM (Joystiq)They use old technology to make games like Mario Galaxy. Nuff said.
Other people use new technology to make more games where you run down a series of brown hallways shooting at military people who pop up from behind exploding red barrels and non exploding grey crates. Then you get locked in an arena with a rocket launcher and a helicopter (or if the developers are feeling impish and whimsical, a grenade launcher and 2 helicopters), and you must solve the incredible gameplay puzzle of what to do next.
But whatever. Clearly you are right, and having more ram in your graphics card matters more than having, say, level design.

Jan 11th 2011 6:04PM (Joystiq)At least he’s not one of these people who comes out and goes “Wah ha the future of gaming means games will be a service instead of a product so we can charge you for all sorts of stuff, you’ll have to pay separate fees on top of the initial cost to gain access to different pieces of the game and we’ll charge you a subscription fee to play the game and everything in the game will be tied to microtransactions and games will be offered through cloud services so we can deny access to games if we want and have more control over you and it will be a service because welcome to the social network cyberspace cloud computing gaming online connected service future kiss my ass suck my dick give me more money!!!”
Razer Hydra impressions: Super-precise motion controllers make it to PC, Portal 2 support in tow
Jan 10th 2011 10:30PM (Joystiq)Dude, part of that input lag is due to the video signal travelling to the TV; there are delays depending on the cables and the actual screen being used. I think the actual frame rate of the game has an effect as well, at least a psychological one. Also, having a bunch of customization options isn't really an excuse for poor controls in general. Metroid Prime 3 has no customization options other than 3 general sensitivity options (low medium and high) and it plays better than any other motion controlled first person game of any kind. Its just well made.
Finally, there's the fundamental matter that most people aren't going to notice the lag anyway. Snivelling technology nerds who engage in never ending arbitrary battles over who's box of silicon is the best will notice it and pick it apart ad nauseum, but most people probably can't fathom what input lag even is. Every time I'm in an electronics store I see at least a few giant fat Midwestern women gawking at some shiny gadget and saying things like "it ain't not got none o them thar CPU. (I'm not making that up)" Ultimately they are the people motion control is truly meant for, not people who play first person shooters.
