The reason it was not done before was because other os was there, Most people do not realise how much the feature was used for example there is was a client released so people could run world community grid on there PS3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Community_Grid)
Also if you would watch the video's you would see how sony totally failed and could have easily prevented this particular discovery.
