Tool-assisted speedrun shows Super Mario 64 beaten in five minutes
Jan 3rd 2011 7:56PM (Joystiq)First off: No matter what you think, TASes are not cheating. The purpose with the slow motion and save states is to be able to get the best theoretical time the game can be beaten with maxed reflexes. The only thing that is saved in the emulator movie file, is pure input. Every single input made can be viewed when watching the run and if the run was using cheats, it wouldn't sync when replaying it.
TASes are meant to be recorded this way. If a runner made a run claiming that he was doing it in real time on console, while he was actually doing it on an emulator with slow motion, he would have been cheating, as he would go against the set rules for that kind of run.
You should also not compare this to a real time speedrun too much, as they are two different categories. Ice hockey and football are two types of sports, but not compareable. Real time runs and TASes are both two types of speedruns. TASes aren't supposed to show gameplaying skills. Some people enjoy ice hockey, some like football and there are those who like both. If you don't like this, that's fine. But you don't need to act the way you are because of it.
