Marvel vs Capcom 3 preview: Crossover chaos
Jan 6th 2011 1:31PM (Joystiq)Without reading the articles at all, you would instantly think that the games are being played by either new comers to the fighting genre or by 11 year old's, or both. The lack of skill is painful to watch, especially from someone that stated he played since the fighting genre was invented.
Now, on to the article. First of all, calling mvc2 balanced is probably the biggest mistake you could ever do. mvc2 was COMPLETELY imbalanced. the "big 4" just dominate any top tier mvc2 play. I'm not saying this is a bad thing however. The imbalance of mvc2 created the most hype game ever created, and also the most skillful game in my opinion. Strike one.
Second, you told dedicated fighting game players the following in the last paragraph: "Ignore the technical knowledge and abilities you've accrued playing various fighters over the years and agree to play this one by its own very specific set of rules -- or go back to playing your old favorites". Do you realize that EVERY game in the genre has its own specific rules? Saying this instantly proved that you have a lack of knowledge about fighting games. At first I almost meant you said this regarding to "footsies", but i have extreme doubt that you have no idea whatsoever what footsies are. Strike 2.
Third. This statement: "It's just too chaotic: Sometimes I mash buttons and win; other times I try to play it technical and get crushed. I can't strike a consistent balance, and that's extremely frustrating for someone who has been playing fighting games since the genre came to be". Saying that you have been playing fighting games since the genre came to be is almost insulting to the community as a whole. Wait, no, it IS insulting. Now I know you said nowhere in the article that you have played competitively, but that is where the true meat of the genre and community is. No one is going to buy a fighting game and say "I don't want to be good at this". Strike 3. You're out.
Mr. Hinkle, I must congratulate you, as you have just showed the community how much time, research, and effort you put into previews of games...which seems to be none.
Please, next time you try to sound smart, and tell people to not buy a game because you can't figure out how to use the fighting system, don't.
Leave the reviews to people who both know and give a damn.
