I could sit here babbling about his back-story, which is actually quite extensive, but I think it would be a bit overkill.
@Colin Yes, he called it Alpha because of the fact he wanted to start treating things more like a business. Before then, though, the game was technically still in the alpha phase of development. I've been playing it since the start and I talk quite often with the Mojang employees(as well, I moderate their bug tracker), and this is the case.
@Tommy S Classic, survival test, indev, infdev weren't development cycles of the game. Those are simply names given to each mode. The correct terminology of what people think 'alpha' is is actually 'survival'.
