Microsoft knows console 'sweet spot' is $199

Jun 9th 2007 6:18PM (Joystiq)
If Microsoft drops the price of their system to $299 (possibly $399 for the Elite), don't expect sales to jump too much if Sony delivers on its software. Microsoft has gone through a lot of trouble to convince people that the power difference between PS3 and Xbox 360 "is a wash" and "negligible", and if they're portrayed by the media as desperate liars then consumers are going to catch on.

The PS3 will always be more expensive, but with titles that are basically 'Dreamcasting' the 360 there's a lot of justification for that price.

Anecdotal: Microsoft low on Xbox 360 coffins

Jesus, no wonder so many 360 consoles are sitting on shelves. No one wants to risk spending hundreds of dollars to repair an inherently faulty console.

This looks really tight. Can't wait to start pimping out my virtual apartment so my friends can hang out. (I just KNOW that Chris is gonna try to one-up me)

Scratch that: The Xbox 360 might damage discs after all

Apr 16th 2007 11:52PM (Joystiq)
Blaming Xbox 360 owners for a problem that Microsoft is responsible for, all the in the name of brand loyalty, is both immature and despicable! This isn't the first video posted of Xbox 360 consoles damaging discs. It's pretty widely known that the console can destroy discs even in the horizontal position; there's no need to switch it to a vertical position.

One person even realized that the console would scratch his discs as he walked across his room -> minute vibrations through the floor triggered it. Hell, even the PS2 didn't have this issue. You can switch the console between vertical and horizontal positions without any problems. Luckily, Sony and Nintendo are very good hardware manufacturers; Microsoft should stop being so stingy and actually invest enough money when designing their own. We already saw what kind of shortcuts they took with ED-RAM, and how that's negatively affected 360 devs.

Three Speech retracts PS3 BioShock, but not other release dates

I wonder why so many 360 fans are throwing around DX10 so happily since the 360 doesn't even support DX10, it supports DX 9c. Either way, OpenGL achieves the same results, but with greater performance. It's actually why Microsoft dropped OpenGL driver support with Windows; they want to weed out OpenGL since it's superior to DirectX.

PS3 scaling functionality unearthed

Jan 27th 2007 12:42AM (Joystiq)
Oh man. Are these 360 guys still claiming that SPEs aren't real processors? I mean come on, all 8 processors are independent. The fact that hardcore developers are letting SPEs run the whole show with the PPE doing minimal work says a lot.

This solution is actually just as good as Microsoft's hardware scaler since it takes up about the same amount of space as a 720p frame.

BTW, I have yet to see a single Xbox 360 title that runs at native 1080p. Some have come forward claiming that Lost Planet is 1080p, but it actually upscales from 720p to 1080p.

This new solution from Sony proves that they listen to their consumers and act upon it right away. For those of you who already bought your systems, don't worry. It's a software solution, so even if you have an old system it'll simply update the firmware. No need to buy a new console (hopefully Microsoft doesn't release Zephyr).

Analysts say 360 selling well in India despite its high price

Jan 24th 2007 3:23PM (Joystiq)
And Microsoft wonders why their console isn't selling. Huh. I think their marketing's improving. It surprisingly makes even less sense than their Japanese ads with boybands singing "X,X,X,X".

Tretton: PS3 will be "difficult to cost reduce"

Jan 23rd 2007 1:43AM (Joystiq)
It looks like they're bluffing. By the end of 2007, Sony actually expects to break even with the PS3. A $100 price drop is basically guaranteed for end of '07; they can't afford not to drop the price, especially with some amazing titles coming out. $499 would actually be a great price point for the 60GB model, and most people ignore the 20GB model. In fact, I think Sony is going to eliminate that model. It's sold at a greater loss, and it's nowhere near as popular as its more expensive cousin.

The most expensive cost is the motherboard, with everything from bluetooth wireless to HDMI 1.3 output (which isn't even available in other consumer products yet). Reducing the price should take too long. The reason it cost so much money to begin with was the use of so much new technology.

Flex I/O

Back in the PS2 era, when Xbox and Gamecube dropped in price Sony stood pretty firm by their price point because consumers make some sound comparisons on those prices.

360 fans believe that the reason 360 will win is because Microsoft can drop the price to $299 and win with low prices. Unfortunately for them, this will solidify the already widespread perception that the 360 is an inferior console compared to the PS3. And it's true.

Dreamcast was 33% cheaper than the PS2, but the PS2 had superior power, superior functionality, and superior value. Plus its games were absolutely amazing. It wouldn't be farfetched to say that any attempt by Microsoft to drop the price of the 360 in any significant way would be a huge mistake.

MotorStorm won't be riding dirty in US 'til March

Jan 21st 2007 1:08PM (Joystiq)
This game is frickin' awesome. I don't know why a bunch of haters have to waste their time talking about a game and console that they (supposedly) don't even care about.

If you've played the updated demo on the Playstation Store, you know that they've been tweaking the game for a long time -> better graphics, physics, and improved framerates. The version that was put into the Demo Kiosks is from TGS. It's hella old.

We destroy a Blu-ray Disc

Jan 20th 2007 2:20PM (Joystiq)
Yeah, all Blu-ray discs come with protective coating, and so far it's an exclusive feature. We don't have to worry about damage to our Blu-ray movies and games...unless you accidentally slice it with a butcher's knife. Those things happpen all the time of course. =P
