Xbox 360 outsells the original Xbox, Microsoft heads down to the trophy shop

Nov 26th 2008 8:00AM (Engadget)
If you remember, the system warranty was extended to 3 years because of the RROD issue, so if you know someone who went out and bought a new 360 because their old one RROD'ed, then they are just tools. Repair/replacement systems aren't "sales", so they wouldn't count towards the sales numbers. The ONLY people who would ever have to buy a new system after an RROD would be those who bought it on launch because their warranty expired last Saturday (and chances are, they've already gotten their replacement)

Don't try to downplay this. Either way you look at it, the 360 is doing amazing.

Final Fantasy XIII coming to Xbox 360

As I said in an earlier post, Microsoft didn't have to pay out the ass to get FF. It was just a smart business move for Square-Enix.

Whether you want to believe it or not, The 360 still has a MUCH larger install base for their console. It doesn't help Square-Enix to limit their game to the console with the least amount of sales unless SONY pays out the ass to make it worth it. The money that Sony pays Square-Enix to stay exclusive is meant to counteract the profit that Square-Enix is missing out on by not publishing to the other systems. The problem though, is Square-Enix would require a LOT more money to remain exclusive because Sony's competitors are doing quite a bit better then them (at the moment).

I'm sure Microsoft had something to do with it, but because it isn't EXCLUSIVE to the Xbox, it is just win-win for Square-Enix, and win-win for those who don't want (or can't afford) a PS3 to play their favorite RPG series. The only people who lose are those who are so blindly bound to the PS3 that they feel a game going multi-platform negatively effects them.

As for the lack of 1080p support, this is very possible considering the space limitations of a DVD. It could still happen (there are a few 1080p games for the 360), but at the same time, a game this big may never actually be 1080p even on the PS3. The actual list of 1080p games for the PS3 aren't that impressive either. MGS4 is still 720p, as is most other big quasi-system-selling games on the platform. Hell, even the graphical behemoth Gran Turismo: Prologue doesn't run at 1080p natively.

You act like disc swapping on an RPG is a daunting task. Do you remember disc swapping in previous Final Fantasy games, or ANY RPG for that matter? Once every maybe 10-12 hours, you swap a disc. That is it. After you swap the disc then stop playing the game, just enter the disc you left off at. Stop making it sound like it destroys a game.

Final Fantasy XIII coming to Xbox 360

You know, I was looking around for some kind of confirmation of that fact, but I am having a hard time finding anything that swings either way. So far, when asking about FF13vs coming to the 360 as well as FF13, Square-Enix's response has been "FF13 vs. has been put on hold" so they aren't saying yes or no. I'd ASSUME it would, but I am not really sure.

Final Fantasy XIII coming to Xbox 360

Hardly. The game will be one, MAYBE 2 DVDs. Compression is your friend, remember. And since the 360 doesn't support 7.1 channel audio, thats less space that gets eaten up. Seriously though, barely any PS3 games, with the exception of MGS4 for reasons heavily discussed, require more than 1 or 2 DVDs worth of space. The whole "it will take up 9 DVDs" is such an old argument that just holds no ground anymore. People have smartened up and realized that Blu-Ray is not quite the necessity Sony made it out to be.....this generation.

@naxe

You realize that Microsoft Corp. is not the same thing as Microsoft's game department, right? Not all Big Microsoft's methods are copied over, just like Sony.

Explain to me how bringing FFXIII to the 360 is "screwing" their loyal fans. If anything, this helps their loyal fans who were having a hard time convincing themselves to buy a PS3 (like myself). I want the Blu-Ray player. But besides Gran Turismo, there isn't much there for me. I was never a fan of the MGS series, and I am a PC gamer at heart, so shooters (on both platforms) are rarely a big deal for me. I, on the other hand, have an unhealthy obsession with japanese RPGs (which is why I love my PS2 so much). They are my lifeblood in the console world, so its not unheard of that Americans prefer RPGs more than just guns and blood (even though Barrett is still a totally badass RPG character).

As for it being Sony's "fault" or not can be debated forever. It is ALWAYS in the publisher/developers best interest to get their games on the most platforms possible, especially when other platforms have a larger install base then the one they are developing for exclusively. Microsoft did not necessarily "bribe" Square-Enix to come to their side as well as much as Sony DIDN'T bribe Square-Enix enough to stay with the currently 3rd place console. Last generation, it wasn't as big of a deal since Sony was leading the pack anyways. But Square-Enix would be "asking" for a hefty sum of money to limit their potential profits on a more popular system by sticking with the PS3 exclusively. Sony just didn't have the money to keep them anymore.

Blu-ray Xbox 360 add-on rumor resurfaces

Mar 13th 2008 12:05AM (Joystiq Xbox)
"Yeah blu-ray movies are amazing, but this isn't going to help gaming for Xbox 360"

True, but does Blu-Ray really help gaming either? Sure, it gives the developers more space to work with, but can't the same thing be accomplished with multiple DVDs? I wrote a nice long blog entry about how Blu-Ray can't physically increase game quality since it doesn't work off the same premise as movies.

"...why not 20 to own the movie, disc free, in HD"

Dude, that would be amazing. And I am not talking about that 720p crap that's on the marketplace now. I am talking full 1080p. The problem with that though, is the ol' 20GB hard drive will get filled awfully quick...for me, with only 10GB to spare, that's basically me storing one movie at a time. Even with a Microsoft WHS set up in the house, Microsoft still doesn't allow you to store DRMed files to anything other than the built in console HDD. To make that fully practical, even the 120GB drive isn't enough. Damnit Microsoft, pull a Sony and let me put ANY hard drive in there I want!

10 reasons the PlayStation 3 is relevant again

I found it hard to believe that almost every person with a PS3 was using PSN. This explains it. Those numbers did seem a little BS

@Triforceowner

If you want to play those rules, the entry price for the Xbox 360 (Xbox 360 Arcade) is $280.

LJ, I am going to assume you are below the 18-35 demo. The people who bitch about kiddy games generally seem to be the 12-17 year old crowd who want to look "cool". Eventually, when your balls drop and you notice girls (or boys, whatever floats your boat), the negative stigma surrounding Nintendo and cartoony games in general will fade away and you'll be playing Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, SSBB, Paper Mario, No More Heroes, and maybe even Mario Strikers (Try it people..it's awesome) and other great Wii titles in no time.
