Brink review: Jumping high and falling flat
May 10th 2011 12:32PM (Joystiq)I'm pretty sure most reviews are done on debug units, so in that regard achievements on a GT attached to a retail unit would pretty often prove to be a bad way of judging someone's playtime with a game. In fact, using achievements as a measure of how much game has been played seems like a fool's errand all the time.
In this particular case, it appears that
a) you don't necessarily earn a ton of achievements anyway (Giant Bomb's Jeff Gerstmann mentioned only having 330), and
b) some of them are unlocked only if you're on the victorious team, so you may not get them anyway.
And, of course, is the little addition they posted at the end that Griffin played about 12 hours of the game. That's a far cry from 2 hours. Take that as you will. I don't see any reason to not believe that, not any more than I disbelieve any other game review that just seems a little bit off of the mean. Especially when you read the review, Griffin brings up specific complaints that I can reason out as problems that really become frustrating after multiple hours of playing.
Calling a reviewer incompetent over petty, refutable nonsense is insulting, especially if it's flat out wrong and I can completely understand getting mildly defensive about it. I'm not entirely sure about the "alcoholic parent" comment but you just called him a twat and said he has a "delusions of grandeur" (...what?), so yeah.

May 10th 2011 11:53AM (Joystiq)Maybe it's because it's incredibly insulting for people to insult your work, especially when you put a lot of time and effort into it? I'd get pretty defensive, too.

May 10th 2011 11:48AM (Joystiq)Man, I am *so surprised* that someone who's already bought the game before release takes issue with the review!

Dec 31st 2010 4:36PM (Joystiq)This is the first year that I feel like Joystiq's weighted system did them a disservice, especially with the back half of the list. I usually find myself agreeing with most of the final selections, but not so much this time around. Oh well.
