Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' annual Pioneer Award going to Bill Budge

Jan 22nd 2011 2:51PM (Joystiq)
Bill Budge's Raster Blaster (PCS's predecessor) was quite possibly my very first video game. I still have the card with the floppy and manual on it somewhere around here.

Twisted Pixel helping with Turbine-developed console MMO [update]

I remember reading this very snippet on their page back when I visited it to see the Comic Jumper announce, which was in September. If the contract work was already completed at that point and we still haven't heard anything, this project is either reaaaally far out still or no longer happening.

Friiboard peripheral takes all the balance out of the Wii Balance Board

Foot straps are a terrible idea for this thing - it's either lose your balance and stumble off of it, or lose your balance and fall face first through your coffee table with a 5 pound lump of metal and plastic strapped to your feet.

Home is also clunky, boring, and zero fun. There's a reason it's free, because no one would ever pay for it. (Yes, I have a PS3, I love it, and Home is by far the last thing anyone should be pushing forward as an example of what Sony can do)

Duke Nukem Forever gameplay surfaces, requests we 'come get some'

May 10th 2009 2:04PM (Joystiq)
News flash - all developer's paychecks depend on finishing games. If you don't have a product to show for your work then you can't stay in business - 3D Realms has certainly proved that they're unable to finish a game and therefore can't stay in business. At least Silicon Knights finished two other games (Eternal Darkness and MGS Twin Snakes) during the 10 years they worked on Too Human in its varying forms. 3DR has managed to make what, Shadow Warrior since Duke3D came out? One game since 1996 and that's before work on DNF started. Glancing at Wikipedia (which I know is not the best source of info but still) it appears that all the other Duke games were farmed out to other studios and 3D Realms simply has producer/publisher credits. Prey, which they worked on themselves for something like 8-9 years they gave up on and hired Human Head to complete.

As for trying to say they can't be compared to larger studios, they must have had some sort of backing to keep open this long with nothing to show. And really, even indie operations manage to crank out plenty of excellent games with smaller staffs.

3D Realms simply has no excuse at this point.

Note to Nintendo: don't bother with making these available, SaraAB87 already has them all.
