Sony admits: "poor sales" of the PS3 in America

Jan 16th 2007 2:16PM (Joystiq Playstation)
It is true that time may make it possible to mend many of the current problems that the PS3 has.

Time, however, may not be something Sony has much of. The Playstation has always thrived due to the large number of exclusive titles that it was able to score due to being market leader.

If Sony can't get the various issues that are impacting sales (primarily price) sorted out in time to at least be competitive with MS and Nintendo on share, they're going to be losing a lot of those exclusives.

There is no unlimited time frame for Sony to get things right, at which point all will be right with the world and everyone will jump on the Playstation bandwagon once more - if the share swings to the 360 or the Wii, then the games will be developed for those platforms.

Within a single console generation, once one platform is established as dominant, it tends to stay there - as the dominant platform it sees more developer support, which in turn keeps it the dominant platform.

That's a boat that only sails once - and making an analysis based on just this moment of time... The PS3 isn't going to be on that boat. Sony may or may not be able to change that - but supply isn't the issue anymore. The things are on the shelves now and simply not selling. (I observed 18 units sitting in a Best Buy yesterday, in a pretty affluent area of New York City) That mans that there's a pretty fundamental problem with the PS3's value proposition - most likely that the perceived value of the unit is nowhere near the current price.

I'm not sure Sony has the capability of fixing this quickly enough, short of selling it for an even larger loss.

FFV: Stuff you can't watch on the Wii

Dec 23rd 2006 12:13AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I've been mostly using the actual youtube site, and I haven't had any issues with any videos thus far.

I do really wish for some way to fullscreen the videos as they play, though... (Unless there's a feature I'm missing? I can't get rid of the bar across the bottom no matter what I do...)

New Harry Potter game under development

Unfortunately, I don't have faith in the game designers here to make a game that does justice to both the source material AND the control system.

There's so much potential, especially for the Wii, especially for the book where things start getting a lot darker. While I'd trust myself to design an appropriate game, I fear that this is going to end up not being worth playing - which is a pity.

Poll: How did your launch go?

Nov 19th 2006 11:28AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Absolutely wonderful. Lined up at the Nintendo World Store at 5:30 am (Where I had pre-ordered - walk ups started two hours later than the preorders) - at which point the line was down the block and down again the next block to the corner. Headed out of the store at 9am with console, extra wiimote + nunchuck, classic controller, four games, and three bonus (free!) stuffed things (Mario, Yoshi, and the main monkey from Super Monkey Ball). All in all, not bad for three and a half hours. On my way home I passed two very long lines at big box retailers, and made sure to show off my Nintendo World bag rather conspicuously as I passed. I was called an 'evil bastard' for doing so (By my friend).

Owning some fanboys, Wii style

Nov 18th 2006 7:41AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I don't want *THEM* to buy the Wii first. I want *ME* to buy the Wii first. They can come afterwards.

(Though actually, I'm preordered at the Nintendo World Store, so I don't actually have any worried about getting one.)
