How the Grinch Stole Christmas EVE {Massively}
Dec 28th 2009 10:29PM Um, you kinda do expect this kind of thing to happen in EvE. It's supposed to be a simulation of a galaxy with a group of poorly equipped empires to handle a vast expanse of territory. There exists no plausible mechanism that fits the lore that can punish this individual. Think of EvE as a MMO equivelant of Somalia. Tribal facions with control over small areas with large areas of violent lawlessness.

Dec 24th 2009 8:05AM Apple platforms are highly controlled entities. To develop on a Windows platform you don't have to ask anyone's permission or even pay out royalities. Apple doesn't operate this way. Everything designed to run on Apple has to be approved by Apple along with the fees. Apple systems have more in common with home consoles than PCs. Developing on an Apple platform simply costs more because of all the fees and approval hoops a developer has to jump through. Valve has simply decided that the extra cost is not worth the minimal revenue generated by what amounts to 4% of the computing world.
Preview of character creation in Final Fantasy XIV {Massively}
Dec 23rd 2009 4:58PM It would have been better if they showed off some actual variation, not the exact same woman after a number of runs through a tanning bed and some hair dye.
Spoiler alert: Famitsu's astrologer predicts 2010's gaming trends {Joystiq}
Dec 23rd 2009 1:23PM That's how prophets work. Make your predictions vague as possible (looking up publicly available product roadmaps helps with adding a flare of specificity) and let the chumps, I mean true believers fill in the gaps to make it work with whatever happens. Instant self fulfilling prophecy.
Though he made one mistake. As Nostradamus proved, it's better to not pu timeframes on predictions but use vague statements like "sometime in the future". You can sucker more idiots, I mean fine people, into buying your malarkey, sorry, divine vision.
Spoiler alert: Famitsu's astrologer predicts 2010's gaming trends {Joystiq}
Dec 23rd 2009 1:18PM A guy with a Star Wars name will post 2,000 times per week on Joystiq.
Fanboys will argue over consoles and games.
Hitler will be mentioned at least 17 billion times in debates about which version of a multiplatform game is better.
The Wii will be called kiddy by immature people 3,672 times per minute.
The sun will rise.
Blizzard will not release a new game.
My 2010 predictions.

The Daily Grind: Are unlimited trials more tempting? {Massively}
Dec 23rd 2009 9:26AM It makes sense to do ulimited trials. Standard game demos are the same thing. Limited set of features to get you hooked and they don't delete themselves, just stop right when it gets good. Plus, MMOs are long haul games, only allowing 15 days, especially for casual players, fail to give the player an idea if they want a sub or not.
Wired examines the death of Duke Nukem Forever {Joystiq}
Dec 22nd 2009 11:29PM Thus is the fate of a company that lacks strong financial leadership. I could have gotten 3DR to get DNF out the door. "This is how much money we have. This is how much we spend. This is when we run out. Get it ready to ship a year before that or you just wasted 1/4 of your life."
Problem solved.
Attacking the holy trinity of MMOs {Massively}
Dec 22nd 2009 1:42PM The holy trinity concept mirrors reality, at least in a military sense. War is just a big, complex rock-paper-scissors-Spock match. No individual can realistically do it all at any given moment. An infantryman can't be equipped to handle medic duty, IED clearing, anti-air, anti-armor, and urban room to room fighting all at once. Roles are played in the real world and we team up to fill in gaps. Even in the olden times archers wore no armor and guys in leather had better movement and positioning capabilities than heavier armor units. Armies that fielded limited troop varieties lost.
A good system would be to have the trinity in place, but to allow players to change roles, but at a lesser effectiveness than their specialty. Like how just about every infantryman is equipped with a rifle, all characters need a minimum level of equal skills and allow for specialization to be built up on top of it.
Blizzard to return to console development 'at some point' {Joystiq}
Dec 21st 2009 5:28PM The reason they don't do consoles is due to their long development cycle. By the time the game is done, the console would no longer be for sale.
