@(Unverified) Maybe you'll just consider this rationalizing/excusing it as well, but I think if the system is consistent, being opaque is not necessarily a bad thing.
Not (just) because it adds to the difficulty, but because it's far more engaging and rewarding to discuss these things with other players than it is to read in a manual or FAQ.
One of the highlights of playing Demon's Souls in my experience is discussing the game with other players. Sharing stories of painful losses or hubris or victory, but also discussing systems and strategies and tactics. This is what can make a single player game a social experience, and it's not a mark against it in my book.
