Why Sony passed on publishing Demon's Souls in America

Feb 11th 2012 12:05AM (Joystiq)
Yeah, you know what? After this interview I've decided I actually don't mind if fans personally have to Kickstart every good game from now on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Yoshida's being honest about this, but his honesty is a little window for us to see that game publishers have absolutely no goddamn clue what is or isn't a good game. No one gamer is going to have all the answers, but all of them at once sure damn will. Kickstart all the promising games from now on and let the people decide what they actually want instead of random publisher figureheads making those decisions for us.

Kill Screen on the legality of cloning game design

Feb 3rd 2012 4:59PM (Joystiq)
Methinks Kill Screen didn't really think their last argument through.

Borrowing elements can and often is healthy for the industry, because developers usually borrow individual elements and inserts them in different situations (the good games at least).

CLONING games, however, is never good for the industry. Ever. And by cloning I'm talking about what Zynga is doing--copying not only ever gameplay mechanic from the ground up but also UI, form, and every facet of its execution. The sole purpose of this is to make as close a carbon copy as is legally possible to sell the same game to oblivious people whose attention only spans one particular publisher. Cloning games never (I repeat, NEVER) leads to progress of any kind.

It's pretty obvious that what Zynga is doing isn't downright illegal, but it is every bit as immoral as it gets and no, it doesn't help the industry advance in any way.

Zynga responds to copycat claims, NimbleBit rebuts

Feb 2nd 2012 12:03AM (Joystiq)
See, this is why people hate Zynga. Not only do they run around stealing other people's games and claiming them as they're own, they also have to be smug douchebags about it.

I, along with many of my gamer bretheren, will happily dance on their grave when that sad excuse of a "gaming company" dies.

Egoraptor's Sequelitis analyses Super Castlevania IV

@Valis
I know a doctor who can get that stick up your ass removed pretty painlessly if you want his number.

There's plenty of reviewers who simply explain. There are other reviewers who inject humor on their reviews. What, people are now simply not allowed to put comedy in reviews? You must be a real hoot at parties.

38 Studios head Curt Schilling elaborates on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning online pass quest lockout

Jan 28th 2012 2:26PM (Joystiq)
Goes to show how terrible EA is as a publisher. Half the shit they do they get away with simply because the games they put out are so well anticipated that EA can practically put dog turd inside each game case and it still wouldn't affect sales.

EA, however, is failing miserably where it counts. Kingdoms of Amalur is a completely new IP that NEEDS to have its publisher be as competent as possible. When we're talking about the new IP, if the quality of the game itself is good the make-or-break point lies with the publisher. If the publisher drops the ball, the game suffers massively for it.

Basically, the "new IP" situation is what truly tests the competence of publishers. If a publisher marches in and does stupid anti-consumer shit like Online Passes on a game that needs as much help as it can get (i.e., a new IP), that's when you see that the publisher is horrible. EA doesn't have the competence to market this "free day 1 DLC" thing properly, and they obviously don't care and most likely don't even realize what they're doing wrong when sitting that far up their executive buildings.

Lesson of the day: don't go to the "big" publisher houses if you have a new IP. They only know how to half-ass the process, which doesn't matter when we're talking about their own flagship titles. But for a new IP, the developers need a sensitive, competent publisher keen on the little details so as to not turn off prospective consumers.

Pummel history's worst Mega Man in Street Fighter X Tekken

Jan 26th 2012 10:21PM (Joystiq)
I love the Mega Man rendition. It's amazing.

I also love that none of the exclusive characters have absolutely anything to do with Street Fighter OR Tekken, yet they just threw them in for the lulz. :P

Wii U launching worldwide in time for 'year-end season'

Holiday season 2012, November most likely.

Zynga's paid $300 per new user in the past nine months, says analyst

Jan 21st 2012 8:29PM (Joystiq)
This is what happens when you make a "gaming company" that's a complete fake. They're fake games that only attract fake consumers. Yes, you get easy ways of making fast cash for a couple of years, but it doesn't get you anywhere if you lack the insight and devotion that actually good game developers possess.

Zynga has hit its peak, and it's only going to get worse for them from now on. It goes to show that there is simply no shortcut to being truly successful in the gaming industry. These guys shamelessly took every shortcut and cut every corner, only for their racecar to sputter and topple from all the violent turns and jumping on rocky terrain.

Nintendo doesn't plan on fixing Maka Wahu track in Mario Kart 7

Jan 17th 2012 10:33PM (Joystiq)
I read this response yesterday and I still don't know what the hell that e-mail is trying to say? Exactly what "unfair advantage" are they speaking of? The "unfair advantage" of NOT being able to exploit a glitch which actually DOES cause a real unfair advantage? Are they trying to say that updating a game means some people won't have the update, hence creating multiple versions of the game? Because they can't possibly adopt a "minimal amount of patches only" policy where they only fix the real problems so as to not ruin an entire track with one simple glitch?

It's obvious Nintendo just doesn't feel like patching the game, pure and simple. But honestly, if I were concerned enough to write an e-mail to Nintendo asking WTF about a bug in the game, if I got that nonsensical response back I would've been pretty offended that they're insulting my intelligence with those non-answers.

Penny Arcade to cover the game industry with help from veteran game journo Ben Kuchera

Jan 16th 2012 11:29AM (Joystiq)
Ew, Ben? Really? I really hope they tell him to be a bit more professional, because in his stint at Ars he felt no remorse in making his biased opinion known, even if it meant sacrificing the quality of the writing itself.

I like the idea of PA going into "gaming news" but they could've done a LOT better than Ben.
