The Political Game: Stand up and be counted
Jan 25th 2008 8:27PM (Joystiq)Zero Punctuation hates on Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Nov 8th 2007 6:29AM (Joystiq)I have every single Zelda game ever released (yes even the Philips CDi games *spit*) and if you think they are infalible then you have problems. There is NOTHING WRONG with discussing the flaws in a game and hoping that the company who makes them hears and resolves them. Whilst I enjoyed playing through Wind Waker, they really could have improved upon the occasionally monotonous sailing.
Now if you wanted to comment upon him slagging off cel shaded gaming, then grab a soapbox and I'll listen. There should be plenty of room for different styles and trying new things.
Zero Punctuation hates on Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Nov 7th 2007 9:23PM (Joystiq)Zelda has become somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine, and given the increasingly long lifespan of the games, usually one that I pick up for a few days every month and cruise my way through to completion, stopping along the way to jump through hoops like a nice little gamer and grabbing hugs/spiders or other bollocks just to pat myself on the back and say I can play hide and seek.
There is however one glaring oversight on the part of Yahtzee; Nintendo do this WELL. This isn't the same old rehashed crap we got from Rare every few months with a different characters so we can tell the difference in franchise between Donkey Kong and Banjo Kazooie. Zelda is and has always been a pleasure.
So yeah, all those who ranted at the Halo bashing (or those who rejoiced it and are now shocked to find Link being poked fun at), remember that originality in games is something that has become obhorantly rare and doing it well moreso - so be happy that they are the better examples. And also be ready to give your cold hard cash to better and less obvious titles when they are released.
(Can it be Wednesday again now? I want more comedy reviews :( ... and cake ... and Belgium)
Will Wright reckons Wii is the only 'next-gen' system
Oct 26th 2007 11:09PM (Joystiq)You are suggesting the early SNES games were comparative to NES games??? Name one. In fact on the offchance you can name the worst game on the SNES that noone has ever played in order to back up your argument, name *5* games for the SNES that could be mistaken for the NES.
I'm sorry to be the one to say it, but this is nothing short of utter bullshit. The SNES not only gave us an upgrade from 8 bit to 16 bit, but advancements like Mode 7 and increase channels in musical capbility.
Let me spell this out to you. Will Wright is suggesting that the Xbox360 and PS3 are just giving gamers BETTER versions of what is already pre-existing games and software. There is nothing new that can be added to the equation other than better graphics and sound. That isn't to suggest it isn't welcome; I am on occasions amazed by the level of detail in some of the more recent games on the Next Gen consoles, but he is saying that the Wii offers something NEW to games consoles in the same way that the 2nd and touch sensitive screen on the DS did. It allows for a completely different way of approaching games.
You can argue that the XBox360 has a better line up of games at the moment, and were it not for the red ring of death, I would already have one and a good dozen games in my posession. However, despite the gimicky start the Wii is pointing gaming in a new direction and without these changes in attitude to gaming, new things would never come along.
Want a good example? Take a long hard look at the NES pad and then the SNES pad... now look at your XBox360 and PS3 pads. Look similar to the SNES one? You have the generation of console progression to thank for it. Maybe when the PS4 and YBox are out next decade you might see a few gyroscopes added to the design and wonder what all the fuss was about.

Sony not cutting price in Europe ... ouch!
Jul 13th 2007 6:12AM (Joystiq)Interesting point made with regards to the bundle pack by the way. If any of the contents are rated 18, then no children will be able to buy the console, if it really is replacing the standalone version rather than joining it and making the standalone cheaper.
minimalniemand:
You pointed out the ratings and enforcement of a couple of european countries, however I would point out that the UK is the biggest consumer of computer games in Europe and the BBFC rating IS binding by law, as with films. This is why typically bundles are with child friendly games, e.g. Amiga was with Lemmings, Simpsons and Deluxe Paint, Wii is with Wii Sports etc.
UK repair service Micromart refuses Xbox 360
Jun 29th 2007 4:28PM (Joystiq)Right now that has been said, The Xbox. I wasn't a fan of the original. I will hold my hands up and say part of this was Microsoft trying to dominate another market, but mostly it was just that the exclusive games were not interesting to me and I didn't like the controller much. I realise this probably makes me a hater in most fanboy eyes, but it needs stating so you can see why I don't own an Xbox360 now...
Xbox360 I started off seeing nothing special. The games were so so but the graphics were very pretty. However I saw nothing worth handing over money for. The last 2 years though I have seen the library grow and I frankly I would say they have talked me around. I would buy an Xbox360 tomorrow *IF* it wasn't for this very problem; the Red Ring of Death.
I know 5 people who own an Xbox360. 4 of them have had the 'RRoD', one of those 4 had it twice. All of them have had their consoles for between 9 and 18 months when they failed (though I do not know how long before the replacement died). This is purely anicdotal and it not a large sample size, so I am not suggesting that 80% fail, but it DOES imply to me there is an endemic failure with the console itself.
I own at last count 36 consoles, including duplicates. That is to say, NES, SNES, N64, GC, Playstation 1 & 2, MS, Megadrive, Saturn, DC, Lynx, Jaguar, GB, GBC, GBA, SP, DS,and others. I say this not to impress but to make 1 significant statement:
Of the 20+ years of gaming consoles I have had *2* failures. 1 was a Saturn that was 10 years old and the other was a PS2 where the laser in the CD Drive is screwed which was about 4 years old. IT IS NOT NORMAL PRACTICE FOR CONSOLES TO FAIL.
I will not buy something that is going to die on me within 1 to 2 years. That is not an investment, that is throwing money away.
In short - Microsoft: You have sold me the idea that you can supply a decent games machine, now go away and make sure it LASTS. If this is handled well and the failure rate brought down, you have yourself a new customer. Until then... I'm waiting.
