I managed a retail store that sold games, and this was common. We'd take the game and package materials (a practice called "gutting") out of the box so we can put an empty box out for display. If someone stole the box we wouldn't be out a game. If that was the last copy, we'd put it all back in the box and sell it like that. We'd never do that if there were copies behind the counter, though.
I guess since I don't have kids, I'm a proponent of the Xbox Live gamertag system, although I can see how this is somewhat beneficial. If anything, though, it should allow gamertags that adhere to the same idea of both must add to their own friends lists. The usernames are just a little easier to remember than the 16-digit code.
I waited a long time in the cold just to play the new Zelda on Wii. That's all I wanted. And, I have to say, I'd do it all again. The Wii has really blown my mind, and I really can't wait until they start putting out more channels and getting Wii Weather and News up and running, not to mention adding more games to the store. I think I've been most impressed with its online functionality, really. I love sending people emails from the console, and can't wait for a keyboard to make things a little easier. The motion controller does take some getting used to, but it has so much potential.
Now, onto Zelda. I haven't gotten too far into the game (just past the encounter with the Twilight Princess), and all I have to say is: Best. Zelda. Ever. This is what fans have been yearning for years, especially back to when the GC came out.
14.5 hours in the cold in front of a Target to get Zelda. If I had to do it again, I would.
