Wii U launching worldwide in time for 'year-end season'
Jan 26th 2012 7:11PM (Joystiq)their reason may be valid, but their timing is pathetic. nearly two years of no support, and not much of anything to show for it.
when microsoft dumped the original xbox, it was six months before a new console hit. or something like that. that's an understandable window. the way the wii has been handled has been abysmal.
it doesn't help that the 3ds isn't exactly printing money, and any games that would convince me to buy the console (layton v. wright) are still a good ways off.
and then there's the circle pad pro. did sony not just go through an entire generation with one gripe standing above all others? and nintendo ignores it? how stupid can a company be? "people really hate the nub, and the fact that there's only one. lets do the same!"
the wii abandonment is in the middle of a growing list of stupid mistakes that nintendo is making. i don't think they're going to win back the "core" gamers with the wii u. they're still not doing enough.
and i get they like having the soccer moms, but the core gamers keep spending. that goodwill is important to have (with the vocal and dedicated minority) in any industry, but it's especially important in gaming.
Wii U launching worldwide in time for 'year-end season'
Jan 26th 2012 5:28PM (Joystiq)it's not just you.
they jumped ship from the wii when they announced the wii u. like third parties are going to keep a nintendo console afloat.
Modern Warfare 3 Elite maps locked to one profile on one console
Jan 25th 2012 7:19PM (Joystiq)this is also my last CoD game. i just want to finish the story, and was hoping that i could dive full on into the mp this time, but i have principles, and i like to stand by them.
it'd be great if more gamers actually cared.
-support gog.com (what they're doing is great, despite the recent almost lawsuits)
-support indie bundles (drm won't go away until it's demonstrated that it can still make a ton of money, we're nowhere near close enough to showing that. especially since a name-your-price bundle still has ridiculous piracy numbers)
-support innovation in the industry
-boycott gamestop (after deus ex fiasco, but regular practices aren't great either)
-boycott ubi on pc (that drm has got to go)
-boycott capcom (general suck for the last few years, and this isn't even a concious boycott. i just haven't been interested in anything from them for a few years now)
none of that is set in stone. there are quite a few franchises that i enjoy. ME, AC, halo, gears, CoD (MW for the campaigns). and i did enjoy the first dead rising, to an extent. but gamers have to present themselves as something other than hemorrhaging wallets that require spoon-feeding and are afraid of change.
Report: Next-gen Xbox to launch October/November 2013 with this GPU
Jan 25th 2012 8:57AM (Joystiq)you forget that a console has far less overhead than a pc. it's able to do a lot more with the hardware, game performance wise, than a pc can because it has unfettered access to the hardware. there are barely any api layers, the os is very lightweight and doesn't really interfere, etc.
i forget what gpu equivalent the 360 has, but any equally spec'd computer (512 MB shared system and graphics RAM) would not be able to run a 360 game very well, even at the native rendering resolution.
with all of that said, i still think using the 6700 line would have been better. rendering at 1080p takes a significant toll over 648p.

Jan 18th 2012 12:21PM (Joystiq)so, i take it you understand that skyrim is a wide-open world type of game.
while this may be showing off some environments, the big difference is that in skyrim, you can go to it. the source engine is a bit limited in how big its environments can be.
Penny Arcade to cover the game industry with help from veteran game journo Ben Kuchera
Jan 16th 2012 5:37PM (Joystiq)thirding the ben is a douche movement.
1. he is a hypocrite. an editorial entitled something along the lines of "everything is awesome and you need to shut up" is bookended by his stupid whining.
2. a prime example of stupid whining: his DNF review. he gave it a low score. that's not what's stupid. what's stupid is that he didn't base his score so much around the gameplay as he did duke being duke. the fact that duke was being crass and misogynistic (or, being duke) was what he spent at least half the review on. apparently nailing the character is a tick on the 'con' side these days.
i stopped reading anything he wrote at ars shortly after his tantrum editorial about gaming is pure awesome so you shut up right now or so help me i'll ban you. turns out ars is an okay site, after all.
so, it's either he does a complete 180 at PA, or i simply ignore PA's gaming news. the latter would make me sad, i like PA a lot, but i hate ben more.
Why Final Fantasy XIII just didn't work
Jan 15th 2012 2:45PM (Joystiq)to this day, i still X had the best battle system of any FF. gameplay helps a ton. characters in X were okay, tidus brings them all down. characters in FF games have been on a decline since X, it appears. i'll admit to not having much experience with XII.
Gameloft cleared after 'crunch' probe (ouch)
Jan 14th 2012 10:44AM (Joystiq)it's nice that people can just admit it when they walk into a comment thread armed with zero information to contribute. that's what makes the internet such a civil and wonderful place to have conversations.
honestly, if you knew anything, and i mean anything, about the types of games that gameloft put out, the sarcasm is slapping you in the face. you are ignorant of gameloft's products, and thought you'd walk into that thread anyway.
and then when you get told, your best defense is a "your mom" joke. winning.
