Uncharted 3 will use PSN Pass to combat piracy, make money on used games
Oct 2nd 2011 1:34AM (Joystiq)Movies. But that's besides the point, games have wear and tear. Have you even seen a used game at Gamestop?

Oct 1st 2011 10:10PM (Joystiq)The problem has existed since BFBC1 so I doubt they are going to bother to fix it.
Uncharted 3 will use PSN Pass to combat piracy, make money on used games
Oct 1st 2011 8:01PM (Joystiq)Here's the problem with that: The used copies have to come from somewhere. When gamers who buy new games sell their games, guess what they usually do with their money? Buy more new games! Now that they are getting less for their copies of games because of the online passes, they'll end up buying less new games or resort to buying used games to help make up the difference. These online passes only hurt in the long run but most publishers are too blinded by the short term.
Don't give me that BS about "server space," or "paying for the bandwidth." When a new copy is sold, the server space is included in it, and when it is sold used, the server space is sold along with it. The person who sold their new copy obviously can't continue to use the space; the same amount of people will be online, and if anything, less people will be online due to collectors with copies sitting on their shelves not being played or sold.

Oct 1st 2011 7:08PM (Joystiq)No necessarily. If you are buying Uncharted 3 under the assumption that you can sell it back for a reasonable price and buy another game (whether it be used or new) afterward, the online pass will affect the price you'll receive for the game. I know Gamestop offers a lot less for games with passes such as these, and if this is your only means to afford the upcoming games, Uncharted 3 (and other online pass games) would throw a monkey wrench into that plan.
Keep in mind this is not something I personally do (I'm renting the game because the multiplayer in 2 and the beta was, in my opinion, terrible), but it does happen, probably quite often. Used sales almost never mean lost profit, and the industry did fine for the past 20 years without combating it.
