@tendoboy1984 To each his own - I never had a game console until the 2000s, and I can't imagine missing out on games like Monkey Island (or anything from LucasArts) StarCraft (or WarCraft 2) or Baldur's Gate (or anything from BioWare or Black Isle.)
The astral plane level with Professor X in X-Men Legends definitely evoked Diablo 2 for me.
Dungeon Siege evoked the idiotic non-gameplay of "click on something until it dies" but the game had none of Diablo's charm or ambience and basically played itself.
Diablo 2 is such a mindless, linear experience... but somehow it tricks you into thinking that that things you do in the game actually matter.
I think the reason why I like the Diablo series so much is that it reminds me of Gauntlet - endless arrows and spells combined with the occasional monster generator!! Somehow they've hit on the perfect feedback loop. And there's the Horadric Cube which is somehow a really enjoyable if ultimately pointless synthesis system. Diablo I's mummy is also one of my favorite sidekicks in any game - he's an unstoppable force of destruction!
Clearly Mr. Mallory has not yet experienced the psychotic, menacing and refreshingly violent brilliance that is Hello Kitty Roller Rescue!
Nothing beats playing as an infinite *clone army* of Hello Kitties (if you open her closet door you can see thousands more waiting in cold storage) who are periodically *vaporized* by *laser-powered tanks* driven by menacing (and quite deadly) Block-Os invading Sanriotown.
Words cannot really do justice to this game. "Great news, team! We have secured funding to finish Alien Death Invasion 14, a wonderful game which you have poured your collective heart and soul into. One minor change is that we are now using our investor's exclusive IP. Details may be found at www.sanrio.com."
Although everyone should play Silent Hill, I do have to say that the review leaves out one very important thing: the gameplay of the series, which consists largely of roaming corridors and searching for keys to various locked doors. Occasional combat and some adventure game-type puzzles help to break up the horror of endless corridor-crawling. ;-)
There is one class of games where the iPad utterly rules: board games.
Forget John Romero - bring on Reiner Knizia!
One might argue that it's silly to pay $400 to play a game like Settlers of Catan when you can get the "real" cardboard version for less than a tenth of the price. But the cardboard game doesn't include AI opponents, internet play, or achievements, and it's harder to fit into your backpack (or pocket if you have an iPad/iPhone.)
