"Can a JRPG still be awesome even if its dialogue sucks?"
The answer is no. The dialogue is the mechanism in which the story is told, from which the character development and emotional ties to each character comes from.
So if entire basis of a JRPG (RPG's are story driven narratives, hence Role-Playing-Game) is absolute bollocks, because the dialogue is laughably inane, redundant or just plain ridiculous, the story will fall flat on its face.
Its why I have never bothered with the final fantasy games after number 8. Its why the FF games are among the most over-rated of all time; the dialogue has and always will be, absolutely laughable. And its even worse when a flat-voiced character is delivering it in such a way that you know immediately upon hearing it "this is soooo poorly translated from the original, who the hell let this happen?"
Its why I steer clear of JRPG's. Western RPG's may not be as colorful or inventive, but at least I actually wind up giving a shit about the story because the dialogue isn't such a load of hammy bollocks.
Honestly? I dont understand the issue with the subscription model. Sure, its 15 dollars a month. Thats about what Gamefly costs.
My issue with getting a game like this, is time (currently). Between work and family, there's not much time left for a game like this, that lets face it, requires a great deal of time. The longer you drag it out the more expensive it gets, like a mortgage.
And besides, right now, I can Gamefly 2 games for about 25 bucks... and seeing as Skyrim is taking up slot 1, and Assassins Creed Revelations is on the way (missed it cause of Batman/Skyrim), I can truhtfully say, I wont experience it for a while. But hey, at least when I join up, the bugs will be ironed out.
