With all this free to play conversion going on lately of AAA titles, aren't we eventually going to reach an impasse where these are no longer ridiculously successful, while they simultaneously dilute the value of AAA subscription MMO's? I mean, we've had DDO, LOTRO, Fallen Earth, APB, Champions Online, EQ1+2, Age of Conan, etc. Also, what of our Korean counterparts, who were originally the prime developers for the F2P sector? Curious as to what the effects of this trend are on the industry.
If I was trying to sell/hype my own game I'd be calling it the greatest thing since sliced bread too. I don't judge MMO's by the launch splash they make, I judge them by the community after two to three months. THEN we'll see whether this game is truly a hit or not.
@Threecubed Actually, considering the limited space for comments, he did a fairly good job of stating that he feels like TOR is a too directed and linear experience. That is in fact constructive criticism.
TOR is a good MMO, but it's not particularly innovative or ground breaking. The problem is that there is an increasing number of MMO fans that believe that the genre needs to innovate and change, and are tired of the same stale formula that games like EQ and WoW made extremely popular. As such, TOR is going to get a lot of flack for not trying particularly hard to innovate and instead making what many would call "WoW with lightsabers."
Quite frankly, after playing a few hours of the beta, I'm of the opinion that the attempt at story in the game takes away even more from the group experience. For the solo-minded player, that's great, but for someone like me who prefers more group interaction I wish that the game had been designed from a more group-focused perspective. Otherwise I don't have tons of real issues with the game.
Some of the most fun I've ever had was leveling in parties in FFXI a few years ago.
To me, leveling in most games is almost inherently boring and repetitive. At least when you're forced by circumstance to group up, you get to meet some awesome people and have cool conversation to break up the tedium.
Yes, blame the brand new indie company for allowing players to purchase an unfinished game WHEN THE CONSUMER KNEW THAT IT WAS UNFINISHED
Dear god, what were they thinking, it's not like the releases were clearly marked ALPHA or BETA or anything that would denote an unfinished test build.

Nov 4th 2011 6:41PM (Massively)No, I have to agree
The problem with GA was that it promised an open world MMOFPS and on release we just didn't have that.
We still don't have that but the game gets closer every day. If only the shooting mechanics weren't such garbage I would like the game.
