Yeah I was eleven years old when this game came out, and from what I recall, was the(?) or at least one of the first M rated games. And it was funny cause no one really new what that meant, and I remember trying to buy it and the store clerks were trying to figure out the requirements for buying an M rated game. Eventually the manager came out and said legally they had to sell it to my mom who had no idea what the game was (I mean, really, this is the first of its kind, excessively violent video games didn't exist then) and bought it for me. And my life has forever been corrupted! Awesome.

Yeah, from what I recall, GTA started off as the racing game described here. When they were testing the game, they messed with the police settings and cranked up the amount of cops and their aggressiveness, and had way more fun with the cops than they were with the racing aspect of the game.

And then, the legend is born...
