Modern Warfare 3 and the rest of the CoD family on sale today at Amazon

Dec 12th 2011 4:44PM (Joystiq)
I just looked up the cod family. It includes:
Gadus macrocephalus - Pacific cod
Gadus morhua - Atlantic cod
Gadus ogac - Greenland cod

It turns out that many others with the "cod" surname aren't actually in the cod family!

MotorStorm devs saved from Apocalypse by Sony

@Kamalot
You can cherry-pick data points to back up your theories, but it doesn't really mean much. For example, you mention the Killzone franchise, but do not mention that Killzone 3 will almost certainly eclipse Killzone 2 lifetime sales. Pointing at years-old Greatest Hits releases that are sold at a reduced price point, then comparing them directly to games less than a year old that are still at or near full price is deliberately misleading.

As for examples of not "milking" a franchise, Mario is an extremely odd choice.

Also, calling a console "second" or "third" based on lifetime sales is really only meaningful to fanboys. Lifetime sales is not a significant number until the lifetime of each console is over. Sales rate, market share, and installed base are the numbers that matter. They reflect how well a product is doing right now, not which product was released first.

PSN fall sale: save on Limbo, Outland, Clash of Heroes HD, and more

@King Johngie the Fourth
Clash of Heroes is fantastic, in a strategy/chess kind of way. I paid $15 for it and got more enjoyment from it than many a $60 game.

Battlefield 3 holds the line, Uncharted 3 debuts in second on UK charts

Nov 7th 2011 9:50AM (Joystiq)
I noticed earlier today that Uncharted 3 had not only slipped below CoD:M3 and Skyrim on Amazon.com, which is to be expected, but had also been passed by Just Dance 3. I wept quietly.

This Madden curse might actually be a real thing: Peyton Hillis is injured

@jsx92
You're probably thinking of Chris Johnson, who got a huge contract. As far as I know, talks broke down between Hillis and the Browns. Personally, I can't blame the Browns, as Hillis has only performed at a high level for 3/4ths of a season over the course of his career. He faded big time down the stretch last year, and they likely want him to prove he's not a fluke. Meanwhile, he sits out because he's filling sick, and even his teammates thinks he's sandbagging. He's actually LOSING value by doing this.

Joe Forte, on the other hand, is also having a contract dispute with the Bears, but instead of moping about it, he's gone out and had a career, MVP quality year. While Hillis is losing value, Forte's value is going though the roof, and he will see a huge payday for his efforts.

Sega game sales down in first half of fiscal 2012; Rise of Nightmares fails to hit the heights

Oct 31st 2011 10:52AM (Joystiq)
You guys have keen eyes. I never got passed the boobs. Hot zombie nurses are one of my weaknesses.

I wonder what kind of projections Sega had for Rise of Nightmares, and how much they spent to develop it. Will news like this cement the idea in the minds of publishers that Kinect is for casual and kid titles?

Xbox 360 hits 57.6 million units shipped, worldwide

@This Little Man Says His Name Is

Yes, they estimate. The NPD estimates, as well. I thought most people were aware of that? It's either that, or go by 'shipped' rather than 'sold at retail'.

But OK, I'll list another source:
"Global demand for Sony’s PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years" -- http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/33854/Analysts_PS3_Passes_Xbox_360_Worldwide_Nintendo_Successor_Within_A_Year.php

It doesn't even really matter, unless you're alleging that they give Sony credit for millions more PS3 units sold than they do Microsoft. My point was, as I said, that neither one is "dominant". If you want to prove me wrong, then you give me some numbers that say otherwise.

@Liquidfingers

Why is that? Are the numbers off by millions? I'm willing to look at your numbers, so link away. What is the actual discrepancy? Establish your own credibility with something to back up what you say.

http://www.vgchartz.com/#Worldwide YTD

I really don't know where you got the idea that the 360 dominates everywhere except Japan, because it simply isn't true, and has never been true.

EMEAA Totals: XBOX 360 21.7M, PS3 25.6M, Wii 34.6M.
Worldwide YTD for 2011: XBOX 360 6.4M, PS3 7.6M, Wii 6M.

I can only assume that people look at the total units sold without realizing that the consoles did not launch at the same time, or that the PS3 has outsold the 360 in most years.

@Special Agent Steve

There is no dominant console this generation.

The 360 dominates in North America, but lags everywhere else, not just Japan. The PS3 has sold about 1 million more units that the 360 this year worldwide. Using CoD, a FPS, which is disproportionately popular in NA, is misleading. Things look a lot different if you consider games with worldwide appeal: Mortal Kombat and Super Street Fighter IV sold more copies on the PS3, LA Noire was virtually even between consoles, Final Fantasy XIII sold more than twice as many copies on the PS3, and the PS3 version of FIFA 12 is 1 million copies up.

Don't assume CoD is all there is to gaming.
