Well, it's interesting that you'd call them gimmicks. I see them as innovation -- how many new things Nintendo has been the first to do become "standards" and non-gimmicks that other companies do? ..on that note, how many other companies have pioneered new stuff that has become standard for the others in the same way? So far we're looking at... maybe Microsoft with its robust online play, and I honestly can't think of any others.

I mean, the d-pad alone is the first of those things over the traditional joystick, to say nothing of many other innovations. I'm sure when that first came out it was viewed as gimmick-y, nothing more than an attention grab.

I can't speak on the re-hashes as that's a matter of personal taste... I'm fine with it myself, but, I get the frustration and lack of original IP woes.
