RED's Digital Still and Motion Camera System now official

Nov 13th 2008 1:51PM (Engadget)
@rafa

No, Canon, Sony, and Nikon are NOT going to be fine, according to your own article. It's about technical specifications, not overall look, and is shooting down some of the bullies, which I'm all for. But in the market segment Red is aiming for (indie filmmakers, high-end videography applications), overall look and cost are the most important factors, not pixel specifications, and Canon, Sony, and Nikon are, as of right now, at a severe disadvantage. The best they've got on offer are cameras that cost a lot more and shoot at a lot lower resolution, and on HDV.

If you walk up to me and ask me which I prefer, a camera that costs $2500, looks good, has interchangeable lenses, is totally modular (and so I don't have to throw out all my accessories when I trade up), and records on cheap and widely available flash memory in RAW and has frame rates up to 120 fps, versus a camcorder that costs two to four times as much, is fixed lens, shoots on a format with generation loss using either tape or a proprietary memory card system, and can shoot up to 30 fps...what would be YOUR choice?

Activision strums up Q3 financial forecast

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you meant $180 million.

'Invisible Harleys: A Mario Kart Parody' short film

Jun 6th 2007 11:53PM (Joystiq)
Cute, but overlong. I wish more shorts would just get in and get out. Still, it's nice to see the spirit of Norman McLaren is alive and well (YouTube him if you don't know the name.)

Sony's naysayers, then and now

May 15th 2007 10:11PM (Joystiq)
Yeah, sorry guys but this is apples and oranges. Sony wasn't expecting the PS2 to sell a new format, and it wasn't asking 3DO-level prices for it.

But if it forces them to actually develop some real first-part support, like they should have in the FIRST place, then I can ultimately see some good coming out of this.

Boston mayor wants more developers, but backs Jack Thompson

May 15th 2007 10:29AM (Joystiq)
Like any politician, he wants more industry that seems "hip" and "now", but he wants it to be NICE. Basically, any politician saying this wants to see their city be the birthplace of the next Katamari, not the next "Manhunt".

Me, I'm wondering where a game developer could locate in the Boston city limits. It'd have to be somewhere in Roxbury or Dorchester, or maybe JP. Definitely NOT DT Crossing or the Financial District.

GameLife's Rosenblum pleads not guilty to VT-style threat

Apr 20th 2007 12:42AM (Joystiq)
So, wait, the guy sends a threatening email and instead of just being slapped with a restraining order and told to attend counselling, he's treated like a pedophile and is going to be forced to fail a semester of class?

Wow. So much for basic rights and freedoms.

Uwe Boll responds to 9/11 'Postal' criticism, pats himself on back

Apr 11th 2007 2:43PM (Joystiq)
If his goal was publicity beyond gaming websites? FAIL. I posted the above clip at the AICN boards in a high traffic category...sank like a stone. The "Postal" thread is similarly down in the rankings (although it's great comedy; either Boll himself or a clever mimic has a running argument with the Zoners.)

All Uwe did was guarantee no theatrical distribution in the US. So I guess there was some positive benefit.

April Fool's Alert #7: Bungie announces Pimps on Film

Apr 2nd 2007 10:49AM (Joystiq)
You think this is a joke? Maybe for Bungie it is, but ten bucks says we see this or a variant thereof by the end of 2008.

The Political Game: Throwing free speech under the bus

Mar 30th 2007 1:24PM (Joystiq)
The MBTA ban will collapse the minute the ESA visits the T. As I've pointed out elsewhere, the ban was always less about actual concern for children than it was about scoring political points and making the T look bad. Ten bucks says Grabuskas drops the ban at the first hint of lawsuit, and if he gets complaints, he'll simply state the T doesn't have the financial resources to engage in a legal battle it'll surely lose.

New York looking to clamp down on walk-and-play gamers

A) If idiots don't want to pay attention...let the idiots die.

B) Isn't that a photo of Park Street in Boston?
