Best Buy selling hoarded PS3s tomorrow morning

Dec 31st 2006 11:29AM (Joystiq)
Oh, and what some people may be seeing as they casually walk into stores are display boxes. They're a bit smaller than the real ones and don't have the white plastic handle on them. Other than that, they look completely identical.

Best Buy selling hoarded PS3s tomorrow morning

Dec 31st 2006 11:26AM (Joystiq)
I went to every Target, Circuit City, Best Buy, Wal Mart, EB, and Gamestop in my area (Chicago, IL) last week and yesterday and counted a total of 637 units sitting on the shelves. I coped down the numbers on all the units and compared them. 421 of the units were the same as the ones from last week! They had dust all over them too, so they've probably been sitting there for several weeks. There were tons of people in the stores, some people even walked by them and laughed. I couldn't find Wiis anywhere though, but people were lined up just waiting for them to arrive.

That's BS of course, but how people on here, kotaku, digg, etc are trying to make it sound. Some may see some on the shelves, but I think most are exaggerating the amount or length of time they've been there. OMG Sony can't sell any, they're doomed!!!

Before the Wii and PS3 were launched, everyone, including execs at Sony and MS, were talking about people owning the Wii and one of the more expensive systems. The Wii is much more affordable and has a selling point the other 2 don't that makes it a must have right now. In 1-3 years, when prices drop for the 360 and PS3 and they have many more games, that's when many of those who bought the Wii will be looking for another system. The same happened with the PS2. Poor launch, built up a nice library, price fell, then everyone starting buying one and still are.

Btw, the only next-gen system I own right now is a DS Lite, which is awesome with an M3 Lite card.

Hack: Play ripped PS1 games on PSP [update 1]

This is awesome, in addition to the emulation, I'm very close to buying one, but I'm still waiting for a redesign (hopefully with AV out) and price drop, and I just got a DS (plus an M3 Lite). It's too bulky and we only have black here, which gets marked up easy.

Major PS3 firmware update in March?

Dec 5th 2006 6:15PM (Joystiq)
> Uh, yes. Sony doesn't seem to give a damn about the games, it's all about the Blu-ray drive and being the center of your living room media experience.

Yeah, Nintendo and Microsoft are non-profits just doing what they do in the best interests of the consumers. Haha. Everyone has an ulterior motive, and videogames are a huge part of Sony now, so they have to care about them.

Major PS3 firmware update in March?

Blah blah. The Wii has one great game also, the only difference is the Wii also has a bunch of quick-port games for kids. Go to metcritic and compare the review scores for the 2 systems and you'll see more games scored higher scores for the PS3 than Wii. The 360 has been out for a year and didn't launch with 50 games either. I can understand complaining about games if they don't have anything decent out after a year, but not now.

I also want the media center functionality. If they're going to have a hard drive on the units anyway for games, and have the hardware capable of displaying MPEG 4 movies, they mine as well make as much use of it as they can instead of restricting your options. Nintendo restricts your options and/or the hardware isn't capable of much anyway, but they sell it to you as a dedicated game machine and people buy it (both figuratively and literally). Whatever.

Why can't I demo my VC downloads? (Wii annoyance #011)

Dec 4th 2006 10:27PM (Joystiq)
So far 11 Wii annoyances and 3 PS3 annoyances. This certainly fits with the Wii-is-perfect/PS3-is-a-failure groupthink that is everywhere. Not to sound fanboyish. I want a Wii, but I rather have a PS3 before I invest $400 into the Wii (sys, games, controller).

Black Friday: Wii/PS3 launch -- Part 2

Nov 23rd 2006 4:07PM (Joystiq)
I'm going out there, haha. I've never been out on BF. I hope I survive.

Also, whoever told you they aren't getting any until March is probably lying or just clueless. Sony is directly shipping them every week now, though in very small quantities per store. Stores may not know they're getting them until they arrive. Best Buy seems to be getting a lot in comparison and they don't have the heavy daily traffic Wal-Mart and Target do. If I don't pick any up Friday, I'll just go to the local Best Buy and Circuit City every morning and hang out until I have to get to work. I'll probably get sick of that fast though.

Next-gen auction prices fall as supplies increase

Nov 22nd 2006 11:24PM (Joystiq)
I bought one at Best Buy today (called at just the right time and sped down there right before they sold out), I do want to play it, but I'm selling it on eBay.

I'm not a Sony fanatic, I'm not a scalper, and I don't care about Blu-Ray (I don't have and can't afford an HDTV). I never got a PS2 and want to buy one, but feel like it'd be a waste of money at this point. If I can somehow get a PS3 for around the price I would have paid for a PS2 (after subtracting profit from my current PS3, if I make one now...hoping demand jumps after Black Friday *cross fingers*), it's a good deal for me.
