Leaderboard: Ultima Online vs. EverQuest vs. Asheron's Call

Apr 2nd 2012 2:08PM (Massively)
Even though I did not play post-release, I voted UO as it had some of the best bugs ever during beta, and I still have very fond memories of my experiences in it. In retrospect, I should have subbed to it, as some of the things that happened in UO beta ended up being some of my favorite moments in MMO gaming, ironically. The stories I could tell, from being a shopkeeper (when there were no other shopkeepers), to when creatures were never filled after eating, to getting two rival guilds to work together (if only for a common goal).

The Soapbox: Mechanical buildup

Mar 30th 2012 11:34AM (Massively)
While I will agree that simplification in and of itself is not a bad thing, so long as there are still deep core mechanics underneath. However, to simplify things just for simplicity is not a good thing, and I think this is what many people today are complaining about.

WAR40K devs laid off, game will no longer be an MMO

Saw this coming, though it is still sad to see. THQ did fairly well there for a while. It's sad to see them become the next Midway, rehashing the same old stuff and wasting money away due to the poor decisions of the suits.

SimCity requires internet connection to play, will be sold outside of Origin

Welp, that's another game I'll have to pass on. Was actually somewhat interested in seeing how this one panned out. Hasn't been a really good city sim in a while.

Ubisoft hopes to negate the need for DRM with support and content

If they dropped DRM from Anno on Steam, I'd pick it up.

The Daily Grind: What would make you cancel a pre-order?

Mar 23rd 2012 11:14AM (Massively)
Removing features at the last minute (eg: Diablo 3) and/or lying about features that are not in the game to increase sales (eg: Mass Effect 3). Adding in cash shop items that are pretty much required to play (eg: early Allods), or adding in cash shop items that allow for a buy to win scenario (eg: if Blizzard sold heirlooms on their cash shop). Adding features that are counter to what the game has been advertised as (eg: GW2 adding in a hard trinity at the last minute).

Basically, if you try to sell me a game that is not the game that you have been advertising for the last year or more.

DOTA 2 patch files hint at microtransactions, more

@Drakkenfyre

Agreed on the punishment queue. That seems like it could be way to easy to abuse. I can see people reporting others just because they didn't have a high enough K/D/A ratio.

However, I'd pay good money for a Techies announcer, as long as they sound the same as they did in WC3. :)

Mass Effect 3 player feedback spawns 'content initiatives,' details in April

@NathanAllen

Except...what happens when a relay is destroyed? You might want to reconsider your sequel concepts, as I do not think rebuilding is an option. ;)

The Secret World offers up a video diary on freeform progression

Agreed, but I figured it would be niche, due to the setting alone. Unless the gameplay is truly outstanding, I don't see this game going more than 1 mil subs (and even that may be high), unless I am way off and there are more cthulu/conspiracy fans than Star Wars/WoW fans. :)

Star Trek Online puts you in contact with your duty officers

@Deliverator

Agreed. Setting a course and then running around and talking to your crew would be a good 'next step'. Even have a red alert flash when you get close to a space battle (with a quick pop up in a corner, accepting the fight, or something similar).
