Microsoft: One Halo game every three years 'probably not frequent enough'

Sep 23rd 2010 6:58PM (Joystiq)
No, Phil.

I don't want a good game every year.

I want a great game every few years.

Thanks for planning on killing the franchise. Though it's not like we expected anything else from you.

Microsoft weighs in: 'the future of the web is HTML5'

Apr 30th 2010 10:01AM (Engadget)
@jasonhaley I've seen a lot of statements very similar to this one throughout the comments here and across the web. That HTML5 can't currently support all of the interactive features needed for the types of rich experiences you get with Flash.

You said it yourself though: it's a tooling problem. HTML5, CSS, and JS can recreate any piece of content you can with Flash. Right now. In many browsers. The problem is that there isn't a visual, WYSIWYG tool to drag and drop shapes, create animations over timelines, attach actions to objects, etc. It's difficult, because all of the drawing, coding, and styling must be done in code, a far cry from how things are done in Flash. That's giving everyone the impression it can't do it. But it can.

That's not an excuse though. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you will, and no one who builds rich media applications is going to trade the Flash CS5 tool for a text editor anytime soon. Until the *tools* get brought up to par, it won't take off. That's where Adobe can step up. They make the best tools for building this kind of content. I hear there is even rudimentary support for exporting to HTML5 in CS5. When they put more of their focus into that, they can ensure they'll continue to dominate even after Flash loses relevance.

iPhone 4G: proof

Apr 18th 2010 4:11PM (Engadget)
I never doubted that the phone was an iPhone, but I don't think it's the iPhone we're all going to see.

Much like that iPad isn't the release iPad, it's an engineering sample/prototype/whatever you want to call it. The iPhone is an engineering prototype. The one we get won't look like this.

iPad devsugar: Moving beyond your 50 promo codes

Apr 2nd 2010 3:33PM (TUAW.com)
The 50 promo code limit is kinda..odd. Or crappy. If you're willing to give your paid app away, what should stop you? It's not hurting Apple anymore than if you'd just made the app free to begin with, except it lets you spread it out enough to garner some attention while still making you and Apple money.

Plus, you could really build some customer loyalty and publicity i.e. Since you bought App X and Y (and won't shut up about it) we'd really like for you to see App Z (and hopefully you won't shut up about). Here is a free code. Or, Sorry we screwed up, we fixed it, but want to give you this token of "We're sorry!" to let you get our other amazing app you don't have yet.

Sure, you could keep pushing updates to refresh your 50 promo codes, but that's irritating for both the developer to do and the users when they keep seeing updates that read "Minor bug fixes".

iPad Roundup: Here's the stuff that may interest you

Apr 2nd 2010 2:32PM (Joystiq)
RE: Data plans and prices
It does seem like a no brainer to get the $30 unlimited data, but for some it isn't all that stupid to get the $15 plan.

I'm in WiFi coverage nearly all the time everywhere I take my iPhone. I only use about 175MB of 3G data a month on my plan because of this, which means the $15 plan is perfect (plus, I'm much less likely to have my iPad on the go than my iPhone)

If you use a lot more data than this or you don't have a lot of WiFi access, the $30 is the way to go. However, I think the $15 is going to fit a LOT more people's actual usage - and they can easily change it on a month-to-month basis.

Apple said to be preparing 12-core Mac Pros and 27-inch LED Cinema Displays

Mar 19th 2010 8:07AM (Engadget)
Part of me really wants to see another 27" display sitting beside my 27" iMac. The other part of me knows better.

EA Sports Active 2.0 coming this fall to Wii, PS3 and iPhone

Mar 10th 2010 9:25AM (Joystiq)
Could be true, but the BS license fee is for utilizing the internal radios of the Xbox. Using your own proprietary dongle doesn't. EA doesn't seem opposed to doing this since it appears they're already using one for the PS3 version.

SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 requires PSN activation for online play

Feb 17th 2010 1:49PM (Joystiq)
No, there won't.

Unless someone has a key generator that can generate a code for any specific piece of PSN content at will. Which they don't.

That's not to say they won't come up with _something_, but it sure won't be as easy as a keygen.

Rumor: AT&T outbid Verizon for the iPad data plan

Feb 4th 2010 1:05PM (TUAW.com)
You do get a choice, in a way. The iPad is unlocked, so you're free to put any micro SIM you want in it While it may only have 3G bands for AT&T, it does have quad-band EDGE that will work on T-Mobile.

So, you've got choice with who you use it with, but unfortunately you don't yet have choice who you get 3G with (at least in the States).

Commenting on Engadget: a human's guide

Feb 4th 2010 12:15PM (Engadget)
@Invalidd
Me too. Strange thing is that I didn't realize it until they were turned off. I'd skim the story and automatically scroll to the bottom of the page anyway.

What I found there was nothingness. Loneliness. Sadness.

But anyway, yeah, yay for comments being back.
