What's in a Name: Thekla, Inc.

Invisible Cities is a really fantastic book, one of my favorites and one I recommend to anyone wanting to get into game design. I don't think it's pretentious at all to name your company after something meaningful to you. In many ways it's the opposite of marketing when you name the company after a reference that few people will understand, simply because it has personal meaning for you.

Pay what you want for a Monaco shirt

@fid Because you can't do that if you plan to launch the game on a console... I wish I could.

@FriedConsole Thanks for buying a shirt!

Actually, I understand the negative comments... if you just read the headline and then you get ambushed by the minimum charge, it would seem dishonest.

I suppose it's a bit like panhandling, but considering that I try to actually offer something of value (devlogs) during development, I see it more like being a street musician. If you like what we're doing, chip in a few bucks and wear a shirt that helps promote the game! I don't get angry at people that listen to the music and don't pay anything... it's just an option for those that feel like contributing.

And if you don't feel like contributing or you can't afford to contribute extra cash, buy a shirt for the minimum price! That's what it's there for! 8 bucks plus shipping and handling is a pretty darn good deal I think :)

So... with that said, thanks for contributing! It means a lot to me and the team that people are willing to be generous! Every sale puts a smile on our face.

Ah, I just realized the article doesn't link to my post explaining it. Here's the post: http://www.facebook.com/notes/monaco/pay-what-you-want-for-a-monaco-shirt-and-get-collectable-pins/10150247792546996

@hdhrant Hey all, I assume no one is too angry over this, it's not like I saved the 14 minimum until the checkout page ;)

But yeah, it's the same concept as pay what you want, in that you can pay as much over the minimum cost of goods and shipping. With digital goods that's 0$ :)

Hey alol, yeah, it's a cheeky headline, but the point of the minimum is that it actually COSTS US SOMETHING to make and ship the shirts, unlike digital goods which cost zero dollars to distribute. The shirts cost us 8 dollars to print, 3 dollars for the packaging, and on average 3 dollars to ship. So for everyone that buys it at the lowest price, we make no profit (on average, me might make 50 cents on some, lose 50 cents on others).

We've had a nubmer of people ask for ways to donate to the project, and I never felt comfortable taking straight donations in the past, I wanted to actually give something in return, so this is how we're doing it! If you don't want to support development, don't buy a shirt! No skin off my back... :)

@R Planteer Those were actually done by Dan Paladin, who is more famous these days for being the artist/designer at the Behemoth, the guys who made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers

@Seasqwaa :D Yeah, a big part of the problem was that Halo came out at about the same time, introducing teh dual stick controls to the world. When Whacked was designed, the designers didn't think that the broader market we were aiming at would be ready for that sort of thing, which is why strafing was mapped to the triggers and LAnalog was for turning and moving. Little did we know that dual analog would become the defacto standard so quickly.

So between being overwhelmed byt he halo craze and the fact that it was tough to market (bright, cartoony characters mixed with a dark sense of humor) kind of left it in no man's land. I was still surprised at how poorly it reviewed though. :(
