He's not even being novel with his "prediction". Like many/most tech heads and gurus, they live entirely within the bubble they're currently pushing. His peers in the mobile social gaming bubble are all pushing the "death of consoles and all gaming besides social mobile" because: 1. it's self-promotion and a biased narrative and 2. guys like this don't actually tend to be game players, and have a surprising lack of understanding of audiences who play games.
Garriott may have history with traditional games, but it seems he has long transcended that into the role of someone who is just out to sell his name and perceived clout as the only product.
But speaking more broadly, social mobile games aren't going away themselves; like all races to exploit the latest fad, the bubble has to burst and the natural levels establish themselves. The promoters of EVERY new trend will swear to you that their trend is the one, only, possible future. And that being involved with anything other than the inside track they occupy is the path to ruin and being left behind...
