In Joystiq's defense, it was the first time they tried this format. Duke may have not been the greatest choice of topic to format this around either. In time I'm sure they'll grow more comfortable with this format, but it was very awkward/lifeless for the most part.
My worry is that the voice of Joystiq has never been anything like A Life Well Wasted, or This American Life. The articles don't read that way, so why are they trying to sell us this on the podcast? I'm sure there's some kind of balance between those voices, but it was not here at all.
And as for the numbers, 50k out of 7million readers is not bad at all. I'm not sure what they are thinking the ceiling on a gaming podcast is, but I don't think this format change is going change that much.
And I guess it's probably not too early to congratulate Giant Bomb, since I'd guess a large number of people who love the old format will be flocking there.
