Spiders are ubiquitous. It makes sense to have them everywhere. But how many wild boars do your see running around?
Even back in the middle-ages where most fantasy MMOs sort of are set, you didn't have hundreds of thousands dangerous of wild pigs roaming the countryside. I don't understand why they are so prevalent in MMOs.
Nothing like building up your city in SimCity, uploading it to SimCopter to fly around in and save people, and then loading Streets of Sim City to blow everything to hell in a crazy battle-race.
When I create a character, I am crafting a protagonist to a story. The protagonist is not myself, but someone interesting that I want to watch as they explore a world. That character generally ends up being female because it makes the story more interesting, however it depends on the story of the game.
I have never been able to equate the characters with an avatar of myself. It's not my story, not my world. That's a reason why I don't enjoy games like the Elder Scrolls or Fallout, where the main character is meant to be you.
I hate the beefed-up generic male character models that are playing to nerdy teenagers' insecurities just like I hate the hyper-sexed female models some games try to sell. They're both soulless. When I play as a female character it's not "because I would rather look at her butt than a dude's butt" as I often here as a terrible excuse in these conversations. I prefer a girl-next-door to the rich slut down the street any day.
I'm not sure I can wrap this all up into a succinct reason for creating female characters, but I do want to leave you with a question: When reading a book or watching a movie, would you instantly be put off if the main character happened to be a female? Does the protagonist have to be a stand-in for yourself?
I'm enjoying a story. But it's not the story of myself.
@Unshra The game was recently added to Steam, which is why there is a huge influx of new players. FE is the most recent MMO to go the Steam route. It seems to provide a shot in the arm for the games who do it.
A real fan of Tolkien should be bothered by there being a freaking mage in the game, using magic. Only the six or so Maiar (the five wizards and Sauron, and possibly Tom Bombadil) present in Middle Earth at the time had that kind of power. And even then when they used it, it was nothing really flashy like in this game but much more subtle stuff with very rare exception.
This will probably end up being the version that I get. Cheaper price with tailor-made content? Yes please. If I want the levels from the other platforms I'll just wait until it goes on sale on Steam.
It's Sonic; you don't need mind-blowing graphics to have fun playing Sonic.
