I did the trial for this game a few months ago and it was horrid. Buggy, broken, glitchy, with plenty of errors in quest text and horrid dated graphics!
There is also no pvp and only 4 classes! The game has no real content either. The companion system that the devs were so proud of is very poor as well. With your npcs disappearing, falling through the world and sometimes even dying for no reason. Quite simply this is the buggiest game I have ever played, even buggier than a pre-patched Daggerfall.
I wont bother trying this again but at least the current players should be happy.
This game is absolutely horrible and is not free to play at all. I have no idea how they are seeing any growth whatsoever.
I came back to try the game and logged on my level 87. I tried to equip some gear that I already had and was told that I had to pay money to do it. I couldn't even SWAP between the gear that I acquired through gameplay! Lolfail. So i did some digging around.
It turns out that as a free player you are unable to wear the best (or even second best) gear and unable to use the higher spell tiers. You must purchase unlockers to do this! Seeing as how all high level zones offer you dozens of gear upgrades before they are quested out, you will be spending a lot of money on these "unlockers". The current hubbab on their forums (and the steam forums) is that it is actually cheaper to subscribe after level 80 than purchasing these unlockers, even if you only play a few hours a month.
This is a very horrid system and any game that charges you real money to equip the gear you earn in game (on a per upgrade basis!) is not free to play.
This game was a very pleasant surprise. I never heard of it before it went F2P, so I can't really say anything about it before that time but right now the game is a blast. Their free to play model is also really good. It is actually too good. I am still a free player, and only purchased the DLC so far.
I mean their subscription doesn't really give you anything extra over the free players. They don't even offer you any kind of monthly stipend for subscribing! The extra credit limit doesn't really hinder me much and I raid on a regular basis. Hopefully they don't change their F2P model to be as horrible as the EQ2 model, where you are required to pay real money to equip the gear you earn as quest rewards!
Odd. I have no problem with the game. Running everything on max on my PC while my wife does the same on her laptop. Fairly lag free other than some transitions, but that is to be expected.
One of my guildees was complaining about severe lag and graphical problems. Turns out his video card drivers were not updated in over a year. He still had the originals that came with the CD or whatever he downloaded from Windows Update. After I found him the drivers on Nvidia's site, and he installed them - the problems went away.
I really didn't even think this game is alive anymore. Every time there is an article written about it, I am surprised. I used to play this with my wife years ago but stopped after the billing fiasco.
Too bad, the game had a lot of promise. It just needed a slightly better engine and some dev love.
I really wanted one but finally went with a 3DS. The price is what finally got me to make my decision. I game with my wife and we both love our PSP's and DSI's, but the fact that I couldn't use the many memory cards we already had for our 2 PSP's, and the fact that these new memory cards are so damn expensive...
Well, money is tight and the 3DS does not disappoint. The Zelda and Mario games alone make for some excellent gaming. I may look into the Vita again when they lower the price on the system and the cards. Until then, we will stay away.
Hmm. Well, I love the new DOFF system. I will spend months trying to get the best ones for my crew.
I also love the new skill trees. Although I wish they had a lot more skills.
Coming back to STO after probably a year (or more) of playing WoW, I am happy to say that the game is in much better shape than when I left.
If they keep releasing content and tweaking the game to make it more fun I will be happily playing (for free) and giving them some money through cosmetics.
Marry P2P: The Old Republic - this is my new addiction. I have not had so much fun playing a game in well, forever.
Marry F2P: The Lord of the Rings Online - the game costs nothing to play and is my go to fantasy MMO. I got burned out on WoW a long time ago and tried LotRO, only to find out that it's a better game!
Kiss P2P: Everquest 2 - The game is epic. It's HUGE and has a lot of things to do. The raids are also phenomenal. Runner up would be WoW. But I am too busy for it atm.
Kiss F2P: DC Universe Online - Friggin superheroes with lazer eyes. Action like combat, fun PvP, almost fully voiced story, and Mark Hamill! What's not to like?
Kill: P2P: Warhammer Online. Oh boy, this game had such potential and turned out to be such a horrible turd. Mythic tries hard to polish it but the game is still bland. Just get rid of the damn thing already and move on to DAoC 2.
Kill: F2P: Everquest 2 - Really, really? Limiting free players to lower spell and equipment tears on a per character basis? That is ridiculous. As much as I like EQ2, their free to play model is just ridiculous. Add to that the fact that all gear you get at later levels is in the said tier and you are boned unless you pay. I mean really, restricting me from wearing the gear or spells I earn is %^&*& #^$%. Die $OE, DIE!
Well, I am in a queue right now and am perfectly fine with it.
TOR is the only MMO that has been able to completely and utterly engross me in every aspect of its gameplay. I love the story, the quests, and even the PvP (although really the PvP needs at least a few tiers - something like 1-29, 30-49 and 50 with their own queue).
Everything TOR does is just great and I can see myself playing it for a long, long time.
